i was going to do a pico reef in a jar and was wondering what i should do for filtration. im going to use live rock/live sand, and am going to try to do a water change every other day can i get away with just live rock/sand and lots of water changes?

Although I am not currently running a pico, a couple of things that I have found in my experience. An ATO is helpful for stability with super small tanks and some type of mechanical filter is helpful (especially when you aren't able to stay on the every other day water change schedule). Good luck with whatever you decide!

I've got a 5 gallon tank that survives on water changes alone, I dont see why you couldnt do it. But an ATO is still essential, even if you use the cheap amazon ATO
