Hi Everyone,

I'm upgrading my Nuvo 20 to a 30L and just wanted to get some advice on the back filtration. I'm currently running filter floss, sponge, bioballs, cheimpure blue and purigen and an eshopps nano protein skimmer. I was basically looking to see if I can put the protein skimmer in the return of the 30L and have a refugium in one of the chambers.. Has anyone tried that.. please see the diagram.

Thanks,

I am running a Nuvo 30L.

I would suggest putting the fuge in the bioball chamber. I would remove the sponges in the baskets and and run your bio balls under the filter floss in one of the baskets instead.

Check out the IM Nuvo 30L club and my build thread if you want more ideas.

I got an intank floss holder and run marine pure spheres under that. I also put some in the return chamber between my two return pumps. I put the marine pure in media bags for easy removal when cleaning

This is the set up I use. Only difference is that I'm using Seachem Matrix. I also put it in a media bag for easy access.

Thank you reeferreefer.. Do you think it's best to keep a sponge in one of the media baskets?

. Great thread and a beautiful tank.

. Thank you.. I do use a media bag as well for cleaning.. but in my Nuvo 20 the return chamber was a little small but in the 30L I should be able to put some bioballs in there.

I see no reason to run a sponge if you are running filter floss.

I put bioballs in the filter media bag and also chemipure bag into return chamber (enough room). I have aqua shield UV (unit comes with sponge filter) on right side along with refugium with intank refugium basket on the other side I have biopellet reactor with innovative marine DC skimmer. So far my nitrate never goes more than 2 (it swings from 0.5 to 2 with red sea pro nitrate test kit and my phosphate nearly undetectable. I do wc only when I see detritus builds up on the sand.

Thank you cojo8888.. Do you like the aqua shield and do you use any filter floss? in your chambers, you have a UV and refugium on one side and a biopellet reactor and skimmer on the other, is that correct? Thanks

Yes I like it so far. The fact that I'm too lazy to change carbon...lol I made me purchase it. So far water is clear like crystal and no smell or anything like that from tank. Also lot of ppl will disagree but it helped me control on ich. Yellow tang had a ich before but now has 0 spots.

I used to use filter floss but i didn't like to change every 3 or 5 days. Aqua shield uv has coarse black sponge filter before uv light so only mechanical filteration is that one. I do see tiny things flying around in reef tank compare to when you use fine filter floss or socks filter but it looks more natural that way... and it's not like bothering level so its all good.

And yes I do have it like that. Just an advice when you make a refugium spot, tear off black sheet in both area not just one. You might want or need to move the refugium spot or other things.

Thanks cogo8888, I'm think I will try filter floss in one of the chambers..

. so if I have it on chamber 5 take it off 4 and 5? Thanks

Not sure about number buy on your bioball and refugium area from picture

My set up uses the Standard with skimmer. I put the biomedia under the filter floss. Hopefully this image will help.

. Ok thanks..

reeferreefer.. Thank you for the images.. I think I will go with the standard w/skimmer and add a refugium.. Basically will run the way I'm currently running but just move the bioballs to the return section and add a refugium..

quick question, has anyone used the IM custom caddy as a fuge basket and just took out the center shelf? I was thinking of doing that and putting it in one of the end chambers to the left or right.
