More dumb questions... So I have a Emperor 400 Marineland HOB. Right now I have regular filter cartridge in. I want to know if there is better filters I can use. Different filter media I should try?

You can use a polyfilter pad or chemi-pure bag. Just watch out for waste accumulation on the pads. You can also use a phosphate media in the secondary filter baskets.

A piece of filter pad for mechanical and ceramic rings. This is much cheaper and better then buying and replacing standard ones. You can also add biopellets or carbon.

Give these a go

Do I just throw them in the hob or put the pellets in a bag and then place in filter?

Okay guys tell me your perfect set up with a hob with two compartments . In one compartment would you do the filter floss and ceramic rings and the compartment would you put something like chemi-pure blue in?

Hi. Rings and floss in both. Carbon in one. I don't run chem impure or GFO unless I need it. Bit yes if you wind up needing it add it. After a few day or a week. Make sure your getting gunk. If not re pack the chambers. I found its best to imitate the instructions
I actually use live rock rubble too with or instead of rings. Mostly superstition I suppose but it is a bit of bacterial seed for the rings.

Okay that makes me think of something else to ask... I don't have the money right now for a sump and refugium. Can I put macro algae in my display tank? Like the shaving brush plant to help control unwanted nutrients? I've seen some have cheato in theirs but I've heard cheato grows vigorously!

check out the hob refugium. Google them. The link I put up is $15 i think. Its the one I have on my 30 right now. (says breeder but same principal) plus an air pump. it pulls water in goes through the chato and back in the tank. it also adds oxygen.
Ive had these on every HOB tank Ive owned. The chato in the hob is easy to trim out.

yes you can put other macros in the tank but some fish will eat them and the crabs love them too.
I dindnt have a sump for 6 years. and had 5 or six tanks in that time. 30g 20g 10g nano 5g nano a couple times.
