I am just starting up a new tank and am trying to decide on what media to put in the filtration chamber. How do you decide what you are going to use?

At this time I am mainly interested in the chamber media, such as carbon, Purigen, Chemi-Pure, bio-balls etc rather than dosing or reactors. I am interested in what products everyone is using and why, but I'm also interested in how you came to the decision to use the products that you do.

I use activated carbon, ROX. I run it for a week and then dump it out. I replace on the first of each month, and repeat. Carbon will pull out most pollutants and helps keep my water crystal clear. I have GFO and chemipure Elite ready to go. My PO4 is steady at .03 - .04. If it climbs, I can add the Chemipure Elite to bring it down. If I get a huge spike, I will add the GFO in a mesh bag.
Don't plan on running stuff, other than carbon, unless you need it.
