Hello all, I just set up a 29 gallon tank for my mandarin since I am tired of fighting of fish and nassarius snails when I feed it. The tank will only have the mandarin, a pile of rock and a mass of dragons breath algae. I'll be feedino a half cube of mysis a day and I was wondering if I should use any filtration for this setup. Oh I'll be doing 5 gallon water changes once a month.

Here is the tank at the moment. I'll be getting more live rock from the store as i dont want to remove any in the display and i dont care about any hitchikers getting in this tank.

How's your tank doing? I Have standard 29g too with few LPS and one Monti Cap. Only have HOB filter that has only running a bag of Chemi pure.
My Water change is 4g a week with Distilled water.
LR about 30lbs and about the same as your sandbed.

My tank is actually about to he broken down and its contents put I to my 110. Having a mandarin goby in the 29 and feeding it mysis twice a day resulted in hair algae growth and i really didn't want to deal with that haha.

Dang. I wish someone would have answered your question sooner.

Hopefully the HOB is overrated for the tank. I have a 50g for my 30g. Only addition would be activated carbon. I assume you have a sponge or floss in there.
With a hob you should have a LOT of gunk in it after a week. It pulls out the large particles.
Keep the sand bed clean(Vac) and really try to limit feeding to the amount the fish will eat.(with a mandarin more food =more cleaning. I have always had mandarins btw)
Most I read about and IME chase excess nutrients and dont Vac the sand. A HOB refugium with Chato always and still does wonders for my smaller tank. You have to clean that out to occasionally, detritus.

I used two HOB filters, one was an Aquaclear and the other was just a small one, can't remember the name but it was only used for extra flow. Most of the tank was filled with macroalgae and I was trying not to add additives but the macro couldn't keep up with the GHA. I did biweekly 5 gallon changes but eventually got tired of doing the 29 and my 110 so I ultimately decided that ill take down the 29 and add the rock and algae to my 110 as a display fuge once I finish my 135 build.
