Filtration only in sump

Building a fish and coral qt tank with sump. Its a30g diy acrylic tank with a small sump for heaters and filtration to reduce nitrates. My thought was to use ceramic rings only.

So my question - will biological filtration work if i trow a lot of ceramic rings in sump and leave tank basicly empty?

Yes that will be fine. That's how I have my clownfish breeding setup. Barebottom with no rock. Just siporax in the sump. No issues

It should. I’d just make sure there is enough media/rock and enough flow through the sump.

So got my coral qt up and running.

All equipment in sump, and water change from display tank 7l per day. Got some dry rock in dt seeding to get it cycled fast.
