Filtration stones?

Hi guys

Do you ever change your filtration stones/coral bones? or can i just leave it inside without replacing them forever? I mean these stuff -

Most people don't utilize them in that fashion anymore, but generally no, if they aren't collecting detritus then no don't wash them off. If there is sludge accumulated on them, then yes a vacuuming up of the gunk may lower long term nutrient accumulation.

do you know of any other alternate methods? its just to filter water right?
