29 would be fine for a reef, use led so you can light the deep tank or if you use t5 you could do a softie low light tank.
if your not using a sump get a nice hang on refugem. with weekly waterchanges on the 29 you dont need much to filter it

The system would stay cleaner longer if you ran a hang on back skimmer, but you don't need a filter for it. Make sure you have a minimum of 600gph in powerheads for that flow.

Thanks for that bit. I just ordered a hob skimmer for his tank. As for the filter, he has one rated for 30gallons, would it be smart to upgrade that, or maybe go another rout?
I have a 29 nano with all the upgrades, everything is there and room made, so I'm not sure on a regular aquarium.

Ok, so are you saying I should loose the hob filter and make a refegiums in that spot instead?
The tank is on his desk, there is no room under it for a sump. Basically, it's what I can hang on the back, or I might be able to swing a canister, though I've never dealt with those before.

We also have a 29g. HOB skimmer and Filter rated for 30g but I use this one for a small refugium where I put the activated carbon and couple small live rocks. Used to have a Breeder box and also Aquaclear 70 but way too much going on. I decided to keep it simple.
The biggest you can stuff under the tank.

Canisters are a real pain to clean... Definitely ask yourself if you'll take it down often enough to keep nitrates down (once a week, minimum). I use one of these HB-210-FR: Finnex External HOB Refugium / Breeder Box + Finnex FugeRAY + Air Pump:Amazon
et Supplieson my long term quarantine (stocking a 75 and quarantining each fish for 4 weeks) and it keeps nitrates at 0 with no skimmer (my qt tank doesn't have the bioload yours likely will tho). I had an fx5 on my old cichlid tank and man did I hate cleaning that thing. Huge pain and made a big mess every time. Also I painted the refugium black so I can run it 24/7.

I have 2 H.O.T magnums on my 90G Mixed Reef filled with coral as my BIO filters. They are cleaned every 6 months with fresh salt water not to kill all the bacteria. Works great!! This is a picture with no Sump.........
29g is considered a nano, as long as it isnt overstocked normal waterchanges with quality salt will be plenty. if anything I woould add a cpr hang on refugem. it has a skimmer built in it and a surface skimmer attachment....
I will say it again no sump required or refugeium
dosnt look like its working to me.... see the sand, the black is hydrogen sulfide! looks to me like you have a ticking time bomb.... ( just went threw it with my 180g and I had a sump lol )

Mine was the old oceanic bio, I kept it original to begin with, then changed the lights with a rapid led kit.
With advice seen on this site, I added a skimmer that fits in the right compartment, a media basket and refegium that for in the middle, and upgraded the return pump. All I can say, is I noticed a big difference with the media basket and refegium. I've never had a problem with my coral, and I keep over a dozen different types in there, but now they seem much happier.
The original post I made here was for my sons 29 tall. With advise from this post, I've added a hob skimmer, upgraded the filter, and added a hob breeder that is being used as a refegium
. I also upgraded his lights from a t5 to a current led system for his birthday last week.
Tank seems to be doing much better. So thank you all for your advise and suggestions.

On my 36G i run a reef octopus HOB Bh1000 . Way overkill but in the end definitely worth it instead of running multiple filters, plus have plenty of space in there to run activated carbon. Looking into the tank the footprint is pretty small as well, noticable, but not too bad.
