Hey all,

I've been googling and searching trying to find an answer to filtration. Brief tank specs 38gal bowfront 2 eFlux 1050's and an eFlux 2100, Aquamaxx 1.5 HOB skimmer and 36ish pounds of rock (tank is already cycled). My question is, is the protein skimmer enough mechanical filtration or should I keep running my Fluval 307 canister filter, I'm worried that its becoming a nitrate factory even though I clean it out weekly and change the filters every other day or max every 3 days.

I’d ditch the canister filter. I ran a 40 gallon with only a skimmer for years. Just did water changes.
Maybe could incorporate a small hang on reactor with some carbon to polish the water.

As long as your cleaning the canister filter on a regular basis then I don't think you'll have a problem. (sooner rather than later) Then again you can probably achieve the same results by removing the canister altogether though. In other words don't work too hard. Let everything float freely throughout the system and let nature take it's course. When you do a water change and really stir things up, then you might want to add the canister/mechanical filtration for a few hours to polish the water. Other than that just keep it simple. GL.
