Final stocking questions for 20 gallon nano reef

So here it is, the final stage of my DIY AIO tank. I have been asking questions and all but I need some help with stocking.

Fish stocking
midas blenny
tri color wrasse
Swiss guard basslet
orange spotted goby or clownfish

inverts
cleaner shrimp
tiger conch (2x)
gold ring cowries (4x)
dwarf cerith snails (4x)
tuxedo urchin

equipment
aqua one heater
macro aqua m-50 skimmer
aqua one 105 powerhead + return pump
filter sock

aquascape
Cured live rock from my lfs
aragonite sand

tetra test strips (works on SW as well and tests ph, alk, nitrate, hardness, nitrite and chlorine)
calcium test from api
Phosphate test from salifert
filter floss for media basket
aquaforest reef salt
refractometer
acrylic (to build aio with ofc)

questions
will the fish be alright?
do I need anything else?
Is my CUC sufficient?
I’ve heard horror stories about Dinoflagellates, can you get rid of them fully? is there a creature that eats them?
Any tangs? (Jk)

It’s likely you have messed it up with the wrasse, however I can’t confirm or deny this without knowing the dimensions.

Yes, your fish should be fine as long as you introduce them after everything is well cycled.

Your equipment looks fine and you should not need anything else.

Your cuc may be more than you need and is definitely more than you need when the tank is first set up.

Keep your nutrients above 0 and give your tank a chance to mature with diversity of pods and BioLife and dinos should not be a problem.

What size tank is it?

That Tricolour wrasse (I assume it’s Cirrhilabrus aquamarinus) is going to get too active in the long term for this tank size. Ideally they need a 3’x2’ tank if not a 4’+ tank.
The best wrasses for the smaller tanks like yours is the Pseudocheilinops ataenia or any of the 3 Wetmorella species.

Huh….. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna upgrade to 40 gallon or maybe even start with a 40 gallon depending on the circumstances. Depends really. I’m nearly 70 per cent sure it will be fine as people here have kept them in 15 gallon but I’m no expert.

It’s really not recommended, if you have a photo I will be able to confirm if I am thinking of the right species.
I have smaller species of Cirrhilabrus in my 4’ tank and they are highly active. An aquamarinus is known for being much more active than the species’ I have. A fairy wrasse in a 20g tank is alright short term however anything over 12 months will cause stunted growth.

Cave fish? I had one and it was never in a cave unless asleep. Very active.. out showing off to other wrasse and daring all over. No one should keep one in a 15g.

I am really confused now and wonder if two fish got confused.


The Midas blenny might get aggressive in the small space. Keep an eye on it.

Make sure you have a tight lid if you go with the midas blenny- they are jumpers long nose hawkish can get decently sized and the basslet may not put up with it perching near it’s territory in the tank, for a 20 gallon tank I would recommend a pair of clowns and an shrimp goby and maybe a basslet if your wanting to jam a lot of fish in there- but if you planing on keeping coral in my experience 20 gallons are hard to manage and keep perfect. I much prefer things over 50 gallons given how much more stable those tanks are.
