I would like to thank everyone who helped me get through my break down and my killing spree... you guys are truly the best! I have great news, I went to Absolutely Fish today and asked to have my water tested. He said everything looked good... then he said my salt was 1.003!!! Smh faulty hydrometer. So, he recommended the RedSea hydrometer and I said you have yourself a deal!

I got tired of dealing with the refractometer and purchased one of these bad boys, simplified the whole process!

Refractometer and calibration fluid is best.

Hydrometers can be accurate from the factory and some are way off out of the box, but any air bubbles stuck to the swing arm can drastically effect the reading.

Always verify a new hydrometer with a known/correct water source to validate its reading.

I stopped using them years and years ago for this reason. Good luck!

Thank you! Yes, when I was very new I did not calibrate my hydrometer correctly...

When I first started my tiny tank more than 3 years ago, I tasted my first batch SW with my tongue. I think I got it right as my nemo loves it. But that was history, I started using a calibrated refractometer when I read about palytoxin.

One shows 1.023 other is 1.025 not much of difference but makes a big difference when you're mixing

I used a hydrometer when I began my last tank. After having nasty algae and sick coral and after much troubleshooting, I bought a refractometer and I was at 1.4. Easy fix.
