i finally built a sump for my 30 long and ditched the canister filter. i found intsructions on youtube for a diy overflow made from pvc. so i made it and tested in a 5 gal bucket and it seemed to work. not only did it work perfectly, but i used krylon fusion to paint in a purplish color to kinda blend in with the coralline.
i used a ten gal tank and a pump i had on my aquac skimmer. total cost maybe 30 in all. i have pics but upload fails for some reason

I used a pvc overflow on my previous tank worked flawless. More reliable than a cpr overflow as those can fail. I moved my tank across the room and never had to re-start the syphon

What I did on mine was use a T so water can come from both sides and not straight from top. This stops sucking noise. The holes I covered with plastic gutter guard and zip tied it on. Pvc was painted black to match background and gutter guard. It looked very nice almost professional even lol.
