I have been dabbling in the hobby for about 10 years but mainly having a super low maintenance 29 gallon softy tank. I just recently picked up my brothers reefer 300xl tank that has been neglected and dying. I am pretty excited to see if I can get this tank to turn around and get into the LPS-SPS side of reefing.
So far I have added a kalk stirrer (diy) lots of water changes, feeding every other day with Benepets, battling high nitrates, phosphates, calcium, and salinity (did I mention it was neglected?). I have also changed the lighting mix/schedule and flow.
everything is starting to flourish except for the large leather that I brought in from my 29 gallon….it has been constantly molting for the past 3 months with 0 polyp extension.
This site has been awesome for the amount of info!

That’s a very pretty tank! I think things will stabilize over time, but not overnight if it wasn’t maintained well before you got it. I’ve found that patience and consistent maintenance solve almost every tank problem I’ve experienced. I’ve done the most damage by making quick changes and relying too much on chemicals. Good luck!

be consistent with your husbandry and everything will be in order over time. looks good so far, and congrats on picking up the tank from your brother! i'm sure the bigger space will benefit you.
