Hello everyone!

I'm a newbie that has wanted a saltwater tank for the last 15+ years (since college) and finally bit the bullet and bought one. I got a Waterbox 180.5 with some extra goodies (neptune apex, Calirsea fleece roller, 2x reefwave 45's and an aqua uv 25 watt) off FB marketplace. Looking forward to get started. Probably going to start filling it up in the next 3 weeks or so.

Question though: For cycling the tank, which Hanna checkers should I target? I'm assuming Nitrite, Nitrate and Phosphate, but I get confused on whether I need the HR, LR or ULR. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Casey

Welcome to Reef2Reef!!

I personally wouldn't invest in Hanna checkers for cycling. Getting a cheaper test kit for something you may only use a few times would be more economical. I would get Hanna for alkalinity, nitrate high range and ultra low range phosphates as you will use those significantly more often.

welcome and the hanna you need imo are the alkalinity, phosphate ULR and nitrate HR dont get the LR as it is too complicated to test..the HR is just a sachet. Save the hanna for down the trck and get an NO3 and Ammonia cheap kit like a salifert to start..good luck on the salty journey

Hi and welcome to r2r
Depends how you plan on cycling …
But I wouldn’t buy nitrite kits at all .
Nitrates …. And ammonia are the only ones needed to cycle and to be honest . Api is fine for knowing if there is ammonia present or not .
A precise level isn’t really required imo .

If you plan on going with dr Tim’s or dosing some other method . I’d recommend Hanna
Ammonia .

A good refractometer for measuring salinity is also needed .

Hope that’s helped .

If you’re into reading … @brandon429 has done all the research for cycling and can provide zero testing theories for cycling .
Dose , count days from start and add fish .
It’s that easy
