Finally learned why I periodically get dinoflagellates (ostreopsis)

So after observation and note taking and reading I finally realized why MY tank gets ostreopsis Dino’s. History- had outbreak of Dino’s for months not overrun but covering rocks a good amount. It went away on its own suddenly for a couple months. The Dino’s returned last week. My tank has higher nitrates (20 to 30 ppm) but phosphate has been lowish (.01 to .04ppm). Hanna checkers. I thought it was due to a drop in phosphate Going down from .1ppm. But that didn’t explain why had them originally when it was always.1ppm. What I discovered from notes and observation every time I start dosing MINOR elements (Red Sea reef colors), they immediately come back. I never remember seeing this as a possible cause until I read an article that they need iron iodine etc so made sense to me. My ICP test always showed undetectable in iron so felt I needed to dose especially iron since cheato wouldn’t grow. So now I am not going to dose anyway since tank did ok with it. Corals maybe grew slow but that’s ok. Also going to bring phos back up a little since seem to do better at .1ppm. Just thought I share! Again just my situation but others may find useful!!

The only thing is that your system also needs iron and iodine (especially inverts).

I do agree but my inverts have been living for years without dosing iron etc. not arguing because I still agree. So thinking maybe combination of slightly lowering phosphate and dosing so maybe try experiment of dosing phos to keep at .1 and try dosing minors again. I will let you know how that goes. Lol

Hey, if it works and your inverts don't go on strike - go for it!

I had the same experience. As soon as I dose Chaetogro BOOM dinos.

Ha reef roids cause my digitate hydroids and vertemid snails to explode. Stopped that last year.
