Finally - Reef tank started after 6 years

Did you notice your corals start taking off after you started the ATI essentials? I have a high nutrient tank with very similar nitrates and po4 levels . My corals are encrusting but it’s pretty slow and the alk and Ca consumption is pretty slow. For a 100 gallon tank with over 20 something frags I only use 14ml of two part. So I’m wondering if the ati program will give them what they’re missing. Love the progression of the tank.

Hi Steve ,

Thanks for the compliments . Truth is I started ATI before even they had in us .
I simply love it with no wc from May .
I am up now with 108 ml of ca and mg and 96 ml of alk per day to keep alk at 7.5 , ca at 420 and mg at 1440 .
I can't say if I would be dosing less with the Aquaforest or brs 2 part if I had been using them but no water change is a big deal for me .

Just to give you an idea I started at 18 ml of alk , ca and mg per day in May .

Abhishek

The classic old forgotten Leng Sy cap - This reminds me why I should never switch to leds and stick to lower kelvin metal halides. I could never get those deep glowing purple edge even with radium on M80.

Love it to death and my favorite monti of all times .

How’s your tank doing with the ati essentials? I have everything I need I’m just waiting till after I get back from vacation to start. Your tank is high nutrient, do you do anything to keep the po4 from getting crazy high? My no3 is about 15-25 and my po4 is .32. I don’t want to do waterchanges either lol

Looks great !! Honestly, am super impressed with Ati. I have done just 2 water changes as cyano was getting out of control from May/June 2017.
I let my PO4 climb high as far as 0.5 and then dose Lanthanum chloride to bring it down to around 0.25 . I doubt am ever below 0.25 .
Acros are growing and encrusting still and upto 144ml of Alk and 120 ml of 2 and 3 each per day .

Honestly, I just go by looks of tank. If I get too much cyano then I would either do a small 10% WC or just siphon them out.

Abhishek

At those dosing levels what are you alk, ca and mag testing out to? I’ve seen on the ati essentials thread people letting the alk get higher than suggested 7-8 dkh range with higher ca and mag

With those dosing am only able to keep alk between 7-7.5 , Ca - 420-440 and Mg - 1400-1440

If I have to go over 8 , it would take me 200ml of alk and that's a lot for me

Hey Man what does your PH run?

Thanks for the compliment man !!!
pH - hmmm .. it runs low 7.7-7.9 as I live in Minnesota and can't open windows or doors with winter .
Tried co2 scrubber and all but too much fluctuations and I have left it alone .
I would love to try an algae reactor though like pax bellum but always have been a simple skimmer guy .
It scares me to change anything in the tank .

PH always is a battle for me - live in FL, stucco house with too many coats of plasticized paint on it - it is a bummer to watch coral growth slow to a creep when PH gets too low. About to put a whole house ventilation system in myself. A Pax would be killer!

Whole house ventilation would be killing :) ..
Man I need to get over to your build to check how things are lately !

So, I know you have ran Geisemann Crystal, radium and now Radion G4s .. I would like your honest opinion - Do you think its a worthwhile investment for me to replace my halides with G4 pro xr30s ? I am thinking 2 G4 xr30s and may be 1 xr15 with diffusers if there's shadowing .

Am scared about how the acros will take up the transition . Also I know this for sure - its better now to change when they are still frags than a year down the line when they become colonies .

Abhishek

After talking to a few experienced acro keepers, it makes me wonder if its either of the 2 . Think t might be Carolinina.

Abhishek
Oh I confused myself somehow. I thought you meant the suharsonoi was on the left and were calling the acro on the right a lokani (I was thinking when I typed that how it doesn't look like a lokani lol)

But as for the yellow acro I think people often labeled them as suharsonoi in the beginning and started changing their tune to caroliniana. I tend to agree it's most likely a caroliniana but we may never know :)

Do you have to adjust the amount of ati essentials you dose during the warmer months when you get better ventilation and your PH runs higher? I just started to run a skimz chaeto reactor and I haven’t notice too much of a difference in my ph. My ph runs on the lower side as well. At its highest when my windows are open is around 8.03 but I average about 7.85-7.9.

I started with ATI in May/June when they didn't even have them USA . I was dosing way less like 40 ml a day during July/ August . It has increased only now that I have lots of acro frags and things are finally encrusting .
I think at this pace , it should increase the consumption by summer .

So thought of making a video of tank. The focus is off as am horrible with vieos and photos but you get the idea.

As I mature along with my reef tank , i realize that less is always more in this hobby. Running just a skimmer although its one of the best in its class I believe and nothing else for filtration . Lights are still Geisemann 250 watt megachrome crystal - simply love it more than radiums even ! Doesn't wash out purples and blues and very crisp .

Stopped all coral foods and increased fish feeding to 4 times a day and a daily feed of phyto at night .

Dropped temparature of reef to 76 and increased ALK to 8 - 8.5 .

Effect is that my blue start leopard is transitioning into male. Its not often I have seen leopards transitioning without females in young tanks like mine. So am pretty stoked about it .

Acros are showing amazing PE with high nutrients and high flow I think. I have 1 gyre , 2 Tunze 6095s, 1 6055, 1 6040, 1 6105 and a gyre + a return seaswirl and still feel flow is not enough. Might add another gyre. Don't know about turnovers but I feel - the more indirect flow the better . Am not stopping unless my fishes are pinned to the glass :D . After talking to some of the successful acro growers and other experienced anthias and wrasse keepers , it makes me realise that flow should be ripping !

Also, my black knight torch from reefraft have grown into 5 heads now which is amazing - thats the only torch I like !

Today's nitrates are 24 ppm and PO4 around 0.27 .

Abhishek
