Hello all.
I have been in the aquarium hobby for quite some time have had all sorts of setups. Never salt water though. All started when I was a kid and my mother got me a little 5gal tank and sum tetras, this was back in the day when under gravel filters where the normal thing to have.
This of course was not really my own tank as my mother did all the maintenance on it. Eventually for one reason or another, it was taken down an life went on. Fast forward some years and I'm now in high school, I decided I wanted another tank. I went with a 20g long planted tank. I had this setup for a few years. Eventually I grew out of it. I had always heard stories of these fighting fish but had never seen one anywhere. It was like a mythical creature. I had books on them was fascinated with them. They were the most colorful fish with a personality that I had seen so far. I just had to have one. As it turns out in just a few years the betta fish craze hit. They where everywhere. I went all in I had tanks and jars all over my room. I was even successful at breeding and raised they fry to adult hood. Once again I grew out of them and moved on. At this point in time I was out of school and in my 20s. I still lived at home and was saving up for a house of my own. I began looking and itching to get back in.
This time around African cichlids we're the fish of choice. I set out with a 39gal that would afew years later make the move to my first home.
This set up was very good and I was in love with the fish. I knew I needed a lager tank to house the fish but when I was with my parents I just did not have the space. Once I was out on my own I knew eventually I would be upgrading. As it would turn out life ended up forcing my hand.
I came home from work one night and found my 39g half empty an the other half on the floor.
I rushed out and ended up with a new 75g aquarium. Disaster averted this tank would go on to hold many Africans and there offspring.
So I have always known about saltwater and the reef scene just never worked up the nerve to try it. There was this one tank at my lfs and I would find myself lost in it everytime I would visit. One fish in particular would draw me in every time.
I knew I just had to have one, so I set out reading and learning as much as I could. After much research, time, hard work and money I converted over to the salt life and have been enjoying it this far. I'm a noob and error have been made. But the adventure has just begun.
One day I will have my Mandarin.
