Have a kid and you'll become an adult FAST! I'd rather put $20 toward my son than a new frag every weekend. So my visits to the LFS have been trimmed down recently.
I did treat myself at reefapalooza, but this hobby is getting some crazy prices (I thought prices started getting crazy 5 years ago & it's gotten exponentially worse).

Really hard to say what "overspending" is, that's too relative. I'd say that if your investing 20% of your income for retirement (401k), paying your bills and fully supporting any children then it is almost impossible for you to overspend. Because at that point you are using disposable income. I'm just a middle class guy with a decent set of skilled trades. Spending $500 for a frag is generally out of my league. But if I really wanted it and I wound up working 20-40 hours of overtime in a week, I could justify it. Because 20% of that overtime went to my retirement, also my kids first got something or more money in their college funds.
I know someone who makes over $1 million a year and basically lives paycheck to paycheck. He wouldn't think twice about buying a $500 frag if he was into this hobby. I think every cent he spends is "overspending". He has no savings or retirement investments.

My hubby and I waited years until we started our tank. With 5 kids, house remodels car payments etc we knew to wait until we could do it right. Ahh but I still say to him, “ when the last one is out of college, I am getting those high end acros”

I drew the line recently, when my enthusiasm went beyond one credit card limit. I started building this system almost 2 years ago and went through all types of filtration media, lights and pumps. After the latest convention my excess of enthusiasm had me buy too many frags and one of them must have had velvet because a lot of my fish died. I rescued 4 and now see the value of being attached to them rather than looking out for a new one. I am set on my dream tank and will be buying in 3 years when I rap for a house/Condo. IM sr 120 around 4200 $ should the line not include this buy? No more sump, peace of mind and a 6 feet long to get a new yellow tang. I will be getting into scuba diving from then on. I am able to pay that debt back easily of course, working in a hospital gives much overtime possibilities but then I wouldn’t be able to watch my tank long enough. Slowly but surely. Rookie mistakes are unavoidable after all. The internet is also loaded with misinformation based on personal experience. Once the rookie phase is over you either quit or start over without making as many mistakes thankfully. Cheers!

What a great idea Rev, make us all say how much we spend, then we think about it, and then we start thinking about how and what and where we are going to spend it, just a little more for this month, LoL !!!!! Thank God last month is over, so how much can I spend this month !!! Seems that we are all addicted to this awesome hobby...

Started my first build a few years ago and set a $50 max for any coral or fish. Worked great for about 8 months. Then BOOM!! Now... let's just say I haven't added anything (other than snails) for the past year. Got into this hobby at the wrong time.

Guys, I never thought I'll cancel so many vacation trips because this hobby, but I'm glad I did I have gaing knowledge, how to care living animals besides a dog or a cat and most importantly a bunch of new friends
