I agree on education. However, i also agree that the movie producers will not agree to educate. I do believe that LFS or any seller of any pets should be required to notify customers of proper tank size for new pets. Not every reef hobbiest takes the time to find out if the environment they are providing is going to be sufficient in the long run for what they are housing. The LFS sure do not care to tell people. I have come close to buying some really nice looking fish, to only find out they would not be happy in my 60 gal. When i first started in the hobby i was sold a small brown carpet anemone. I was not told they should be kept only in a well established tank. My tank was only approx 2 months old. Needless to say, the poor critter died. Since then i always educate myself before purchace. I always google the animal at the store if i am unfamiliar with its requirements. It should be required for pet sellers to state grow out size for any pet sold so that the purchaser has the right information.

Whilst I agree with the above in that it would be nice if all LFS gave accurate care guides for animals, at the end of the day we are all responsible for what goes in our tanks and therefore you can't claim anything is miss sold because you should be fully aware of the requirements said animal needs.

I did overhear in one shop once the owner answer a customer (guessing they were a friend) who asked if they could keep a certain animal, his reply which basically says it "if you don't know then you are too stupid to try", basically do your research and make up your own mind.

Dude they even tell you viewer discretion is advised. Are you so simple you don't understand that is a disclaimer. Every movie or tv show tells you may not be suitable for younger audiences but those aren't disclaimers , right? Like the first post said they didn't want negativity. If you didn't agree you should have just left it at that. If you actually read the thread topic they are just trying to get some awareness for what it takes to keep these fish and the effect of OUR HOBBY on OUR WORLDS OCEANS. So again please just leave the thread your ignorance is really astounding. God bless you and happy reefing

I would sign it.

It is on the part of LFS owners to educate customers, and on the customers to educate themselves. However, let's say you run a company, a customer says they need something done in a week. If it's the sixth day and your guys have done nothing, do you just leave it at that and not do it? No, you would get to work and finish the job, since your customer needs it by the 7th day. Same goes for this - the LFS may not educate the customer and the customer may not educate themselves, but that doesn't mean that nothing should be done and a tang or two is destined to die.

Disclaimers tell you what's in a movie not what to do with your life after you watch a movie. Saying a movie has violence in it is much diffrent then having a 30 second informational lecturing you about how killing random people and you shouldn't kill anyone who doesn't deserve it. In the informational they should also tell people to load their guns with hollow points to prevent over penetration. The information should also tell people they should go to the range and practice shooting to keep their skill set up.

I never defended those disclaimers and couldn't give a crap about them. If the law changes and they are not required I wouldn't give a crap.

I'll sign it. Whether it's the store owners who should educate the public or the public who should educate themselves is not the argument here. The argument is that any movie can greatly influence public opinion, as well as special interest groups like ours. Whether we decide as a collective to try and educate the public in whatever way we can is up to us, and I am all for greater education in whatever form that comes.

I will probably regret by saying this but I do support the new "finding Dory" movie. Finding "nemo" was what got me started in this hobby and honestly can't thank enough for it. It opened my eyes to this amazing and awesome hobby that I dearly love and care for today.

LFS are the least I would worry about since I have encountered many who "DO" try to educate their customers. My main concern would be the online stores that sells anything to anyone without any questioning or recommendations. When was the last time you were asked about your tank size or water parameters prior to placing an online order?

I was looking at a few posts on R2R and other communities I am involved in that intrigued me quite a bit, basically the old posts that sometimes resurges once in awhile and I couldn't help noticing how many of the members that were absolutely active to this community vanished overnight. Bottom line is, this hobby is intriguing, hard to upkeep and not meant for anyone.

Although this new movie may cause a hype to create many new uneducated hobbyists, it will also create new passionate hobbyist like you and I who do spend time researching. I've seen the good, bad and ugly in this hobby for many years. Seen, how many fishes never make it upon delivery to a LFS and how many dies while waiting for a new home staying on those harsh environment.

In my opinion, we can not stop this industry from harvesting live stock from our reefs but we can give them a "better" survival opportunity by having more educated people involved in this hobby so yeah, I regreafully support the movie

Checking in on whats going on here as i went to one my lfs over the weekend and very first thing i heard even before heard the tanks running was "look its a nemo".I am not saying this is a bad thing and I am in no way against the movie. I absolutely loved finding nemo and have been waiting fo finding dori.However given as influential this movie is I still believe we should try to educate the general audience in some way of how these fish are caught and what could happen if overfishing were to continue.

Dalmatians, golden retrievers, and many other common family pets owe much of their success (even if temporary) on Disney movies. Dalmatians are good dogs but not a good pet for most people - they need special leadership and consideration due to health issues, blindness, deafness, and overall temperament. They can be great dogs but many are not as depicted.

I don't know what my point is.

I'm down with getting something signed and attempting to get the production company to put a blurb in the movie. However, the real responsibility falls on the LFS to make sure we're doing the right thing, not just for the "quick buck" but for the sustainability of our ecosystem and our hobby. If they chose a sale over that, and I have heard a lot do, shame on them.

I think if anything instead of flashing a quick tidbit on how to keep fish in a home aquarium.... How about something on donating/educating on coral reefs themselves.

I call Clown fish Nemo.... I guess i need to be educated..

In the end we stick (Tang's) in a box... I am up for some extreme cases of tangs in small tanks but it can be done.. I love how I hear that you need a 7 foot tank to hold some species... A fish that travels miles and 7 feet is good? I have a large reef aquarium and I still feel bad putting Tangs in it...

It is up to a person to educate themselves on what is needed or required to keep a animal alive. Finding a good LFS can help but it is your responsibility to educate no one else.

I do not enjoy fish police at all.. I have asked quite a few LFS around my area just how many large tanks they sell in a year and it is quite reveling... Yet in total there are 100s if not 1000s of tangs brought in and sold.. I wonder how many are in a proper sized tank as people would say?

I think there is a underling problem with or without the movie influencing anything.

On a side note I do not project human emotions onto a fish as in many country's reef fish are eaten/commercially fished.

This is just my opinion.

I totally agree with you G. I don't think that people on this site recognize the fact of how liberal Disney is and would have no problem condemning the whole aquarium trade in a tidbit before or after the movie. And, I can't see Ellen being any different.
I have spent time in Hawaii the last three years and I have talked with the people at the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources. It's a real concern that the aquarium collection trade will be closed down in Hawaii even though they are putting many areas off limits to collecting. And yes, Snorkel Bob is one of the biggest voices against the trade.
If we are truly concerned I believe that the best course of action would be to hand out small posters and take them to the LFS asking for parents to talk with the store staff to get fully educated about keeping salt water fish.
