A friend gave me a frag of finger leather about a year ago for my new reef. Since that time I have fragged it once and now have 2 nice size colonies going. I just noticed that there is a 3rd colony now. I didn't put it where it is and it is seperated from my existing colony on another piece of rock just curious how this would happen.

Leathers can drop pieces to form new colonies. They can frag themselves. sometimes it's done for reproduction purposes, sometimes it's a reaction to stress. Wherever the bud settles will form a new colony.

Ok thank you. Was just wondering how it got there. I have GSP, finger leathers and xenia and they all are growing and seem to be doing well. Someday I want to upgrade my lighting and try some lps and sps. I think I will wait until I can afford a pair of kessils for my 30 gallon. That should be enough for about anything.

Just so you know Gsp and Xenia can take over a tank and choke out other corals. Just a thought if you want to try other stuff down the road.

keep them isolated on pieces of rock. If I upgrade lighting I have plans to trade them to my LFS for new live rock.
