and have had some good luck harvesting shells on the shores of South Carolina. Some nice fatty porous chunks in here. Plan on mesh bagging these and tossing them in the sump. Nothing better than some natural biological filtration to keep the water rocking!

The shells won't do anything for filtration if the animal is not alive to filter. It'll probably be worse to put them in your tank since clam shells have been known to leach phosphates.

That's fantastic news seeing as how I love wandering around the beach under the hot sun for hours. Getting a back ache has been a huge bonus as well.

Crush them up maybe? Was thinking a home made bio ball...
 
Then yahoo! you are about to think you won the lottery with all the good news..... those shells has holes in them like they have/had little boring critters. There's all sorts of cooties in stuff like that. maybe throw it in a bucket of water and QT is legit before putting it in your tank.
