Hi there, I am new to reefing, literally just put a finnex titanium heater into water and it blew up, some of this soot was in the tank. Do you know how dangerous it is for fish and coral?

Can you run some carbon? Use Poly Filter. https://www.marinedepot.com/poly-filter. Can you do a water change? Was the heater ran outside the water? If it was brand new maybe it is a return unit.
The only way i can see it exploding is out of water while hot, enteted tsnk hot or placed in tank and plugged in right away in which you want to wait a few hours to allow temperature compensation
Yes it should shut off unless temperature range was not yet set
What you see is titanium alloy and may be magnetic
