Hey. I'm looking to restock my tank. There is a Fire Clown at my LFS. It's really pretty. Anyway. Would I be able to pair it with a different type of clown? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have had the most success pairing clowns of the same species and then secondly, pairing clownfish of the same complex. The other fish in the complex of the Fire Clownfish (Amphiprion ephippium) include the frenatus (Tomato), mcullochi, melanopus, rubrocinctus, and barberi. While it may be more challenging to cross species of clownfish, this is where some of the designer clownfish come from.

Orafarm has quite a few hybrids of various types. One of the most interesting is the maroon x ocellaris clownfish, as the maroon clownfish belongs to the genus Premnas, while the ocellaris and all other currently known clownfish belongs to the genus Amphiprion. Given that this is an example of an intergeneric hybrid, it seems like clownfish in general should be genetically similar enough for any species to crossbreed, which seems to be the case given the other examples they have.

With that said, species could genetically diverge at different rates, so it is not a given that it is 100% possible. But it is at least probable. So yeah, if you want, you can try whatever other species you'd like.

Currently I have a cinnamon and an ocellaris that are pairing up. Will see how it goes. :3
