Could I keep a purple and regular fire fish in a 10 gallon aquarium with no issues if I add them at the same time?

It’s a Chance, I tried this on a 75g but they had plenty of space but never actually fought both were chill I acclimated and added them together, 10g I can’t say

All my researching pointed to a few "regulars" (Nemateleotris magnifica) being the best bet for keeping the peace. I got 4, put them in a 90long and sort of lucked out. They were okay at first. The big one started bullying one of the smaller ones. Then they paired off and went to opposite ends of the tank. The big one would still come over and disturb the peace. I ended up losing the bully pair to ich and the bullied pair are currently finishing copper treatment. I think it all boils down to each fish being different. If I can find the post I based my decision off of I'll post it here.

20 gallons also seems to be the recommended minimum for these guys. With that being said, my four made it though a four week quarantine with no problems in a 10 gallon. I don't know that I would do it for a permanent home though.

No. Firefish will not tolerate other firefish long term unless they are a mated pair. Mated pairs are difficult to achieve.

Just get one.

I’d say no. Sorry. Not what u wanted to hear. And I can totally sympathize. I’m getting a new tank and researching my stock list. Turns out many of the fish I want don’t get along or need a bigger tank. Bummer. There’s always going to be something I want that I can’t have in my tank. But there are also tons of things I can have and I just focus on those.

Whatever you decide to do, best of luck. Enjoy ;)

Consider getting a shrimp goby like the high fin or yasha instead of one of the firefish if you like the look of the fish. Other fish to consider include a tailspot blenny, pictus or two spot blenny, cleaner goby, Pygmy geometric perchlet, possum or pink streaked wrasse. All of those will be more likely to set your tank up for success than 2 firefish.

I would agree for the most part except for the Geometric Pygmy Hawkfish. In a small cramped tank like that another small fish is more likely to become food. The rest of the list are great recommendations though.

The Pygmy perchlet is so small
I doubt it could eat a fish bigger than an trimma goby or something like that but I guess it’s posisble? Here’s a write up from Scott Michael about this fish, which is one of my faves

Mine love each other. Slept together since day one of QT. 10 gallons is insanely small though.
Mine stay in the same little area of the tank and sleep next to each other under the same rock. I may have just gotten lucky. I took the gamble since I have a 120 gallon tank and if they didn’t like eachother they could stay in different parts of the tank.
If you get the two, you should definitely not have any other fish in that tank.
It’s a gamble, but worked for me. They showed a little aggression toward each other early on, but just seem to love each other now.
You would have to add them at the same time. I’d get the smallest, healthy ones available.
I’ve had them 6 months though, so we’ll see if they change. I can’t imagine, but heard they can change after like a year. We shall see
