Maybe a noob question (I’m 4 months into this hobby) but if different types of fire fish (color) are in the same tank will they school together? Example if i were to buy 1 of each type (color) would they school up?

They should be fine. Taking a shot here and you are referring to the normal fire fish and a purple or even an exquisite fish.
I got a purple first. He was in the tank for about 6 months. He had a favorite rock, and never left a 1' sphere around that rock. Model citizen, never bothered anyone.
I added 4 firefish, the red ones. He went bezerk. Chased them, harrassed them, they eventually hid in the back of the rockwork for 3-4 weeks. Eventually, they very slowly emerged and now have a spot they inhabit (about a 2' sphere), though they sometimes cross into his territory, they don't fight anymore.
I only got away with this because I have an 800g tank, with a huge hiding area. In a smaller tank they would have all died.
