Hey everyone, so I just got a fire shrimp.. Expensive little thing. Anyway, I have only had time for about 48 hours, I haven't seen him eat. Furthermore, all he does is hide. I know its still early, however, I also know the first 72 hours are critical to its survival in a new tank. So when it comes to feed how do you ensure he's eating?? Also would he eat whats on the rocks allege? or does he need to be target feed?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

Fire shrimp are notorious for staying out of site. Mine will forage around a little at night but even then he’s a cautious little booger. I try to feed the tank foods as the lights are beginning to dim at least 2x’s/week. To ensure that they can get to some food. Other than that they will scavenge and find it on there own. Hope this helps. And good luck!!

Time will bring them out to the open, at their ages up they will be bold to the point not scare of anything that not looking at them as a food source, my fire shrimp even come and try to clean my hand when I do a tank clean up, they are part of clean up crew but they would enjoy a piece of it own piece of market prawn seafood for a meal.

That’s normal for these guys. As everyone has mentioned they will hide a lot in the beginning. Mine now comes out more after three months in the tank. I shred raw shrimp and he will come and grab a piece. Feed about twice a week.

Twice per week... Okay! Thank you!

Mine was super shy for around 3 months, after which it began hanging out in the front of the tank where it could see what was going on. For feeding, I would take some finely chopped shrimp or squid and offer it to the shrimp by broadcasting it with light flow directed toward the shrimp using a powerhead or the outflow of your return pump. Pointing a turkey baster or something at it could spook it or cause it to be wary of the food. After a week or so it should begin to associate you messing around with the tank as food and begin to act more interested when you're around the tank.

I have a pair for about a year now and in the beginning they hide a lot. They still hide now, but will come out during feeding. Just give he or she some time.
