My lovely wife has expressed an interest in us having a fire fish, or indeed a royal grammar.

Just wanted some thoughts on what they are like to keep.

Anything that I may need to know about?

I always research fish and verts she likes now as she has a tendency to pick things which turn out to be mass murderers or virtually impossible to keep alive!

Cheers

What's the size of your tank and other inhabitants?

I can speak to an exquisite firefish, which I think is very close to a purple firefish. Nice size nano fish. Seems peaceful in a 40gal tank with a tailspot blenny (previously in a 10g cube with the blenny and all fine there too). Tends to find a cave-like structure and stay there until the water flow turns off during feeding times.

No experience with a royal gramma, but that is a basslet that likely has a different behavior and aggression profile.

275 litre with a pair of clowns and a yellow tail damsel

Never kept a firefish myself, but they're usually thought of as peaceful and hardy, if prone to jumping. I have kept grammas, and they're very nice fish. Hardy, colorful, readily available, and not often aggressive. In a 275L, you should be fine adding both.

They are very timid fish, perfect for a peaceful community tank. Hope your damsels welcome it, but be aware of the possibility they might be aggressive to any newcomers.

They are nice fish don't bother other fish normally. They can be a little shy though I have had firefish that were always out and about from day 1. One I had took about a month before it felt comfortable enough to hang out most of the time. They are bad jumpers and need a lid. The purple and helfrichi I'm my experience have been more timid. Beautiful fish though! One of my favorites. It is a great choice for Nanos and tanks with peaceful easy going fish
