First 8.5G cube tank, ocean water, learning curve.

Having fun with myREEF-studio lenses. I did not know what difference it does.

Candy Cane is still alive after yesterday's adventure, it was eating, but still shrunk - maybe it will make it. I feel like places stung by war coral after the fall are nasty.

And some zoas, I do not know what is the name of the green/yellow ones, anyone?

Let's get ready to the rumble! Starting the ADA90 style cabinet build.

Keep the fingers and toes crossed!
I checked many designs and decided to go ahead this time with plywood instead of timber frame and then skinning.

Tank is 182 + glass + hardscape should be approx 250kg, the design should be good for up to 400kg. The life will show, but I am pretty confident it will work and I do not live in earthquake zone, so does not have to be armoured;)

I build it up, sand, filled the cracks, sand, primed yesterday. Today morning sand, primed again, prepared doors and then sand and painted with the first coat.

It was a nice day, so it dried very fast.

Job done! Now I need to equip the inside. Starting on design for AIO panel, mock-up should be ready today :)

The stand looks like this:

Saved €500 at minimum :)

Definitely following, just read from page one... I too am starting from freshwater winging it haha

Good news today!

1. Candy cane after the fail with war coral and redecorating by the hermits is getting back to shape. Today morning it pumped slightly for the first time in over a week and the feeders were very visible - good!

can1.jpg

can2.jpg

Up until today, it was just a skeleton with some green cover on - she was not pumping at all but luckily it is getting to norm (I hope). I believe next week it should be all grand!

2. Duncan when feeding surprised me big time! Not one but two new heads popped out!

dun1.jpg

He is in the tank for less than a month? Well done duncan!

3. I managed to arrange (I hope) perspex cutting for the ADA90 AIO project. I have to ship it from the UK... and the cost is at GBP75 - rip off but I have no other option. My magical skills in Photoshop gave the cutters an impression I will be able to send them jigsaw in vectors hahaha

Here it is (I will be able to cut shorter the second chamber overflow panel if needed):

If someone is looking for making their own DIY AIO for ADA90 (900x450mm) tank (182 litre).

Home made DIY ATO - gravity method has arrived. I used food container and it lasts for two litres - a week at least :)

Cost: €6.99 (container) + scraps from the drawer.

I need to rework ATO, all water leaked into the tank overnight. Not a big deal. Just need to wait for it to evaporate.
There must be some issue with the seal of the container.

But what I noticed... is that when water went up that cm the flow is more gentle and coral seem to love it! the circulator is switching for 15 mins from time to time to blow all around only.

From the good news I at least have ordered and paid for AIO panels. Skimmer and the return pump are on my way already :) I think I might be setting up a new thread anytime soon!

I will try to get some photo from under the blues later.

I was going to sob quietly in the corner and not post the disaster from my little jar... but maybe I can find some advise here.

So yesterday I found a sponge on my palys. Thanks @SimonMo @vetteguy53081 @twentyleagues @EeyoreIsMySpiritAnimal for the help! I ordered tools and planningto perform the action on Sunday. But surely I could not resist and I pinched two-three polyps which were getting onto the rock and disturbing zoa...
This was a mistake... Overnight my SPS are almost completely bleached... There is coloration, some polyps are coming out and none of them fell off (I have some previous experience in butchering my corals...) Water changed (15%) and it is slowly starting to come back.

Here is my question, if the corals look like this now:

1683315718209.png

but are showing some pigmentation and it is visible under blue lights, shall keep the faith or get ready to look for new victims?

1683315754622.png

1683315783246.png

Obviously I am checking the tank every 15 minutes now... the color is coming back... slowly...
Shall I try to feed them? Give them AB+, iodine anything to help them out?

On the bright side, I managed at last to order the parts (acrylic panels) for the AIO ADA90 I am planning to start this summer :) I also collected today a skimmer and the pump, so I checked on my mockup if it fits, and hooray! with a lot of margin!

The tank looks like this today :( but hey, not only good things should be posted but especially the bad ones! It is always the best to learn from other's mistakes!

PS. my ATO turns to not keep the pressure and I need to rework it ;)

oh wow thats crazy. Glad they look to be making a come back. Ive never heard of or seen something like that. Its totally possible there is some chemical in the sponge that got in the water when you pulled some. Can you take the whole "rock/coral" its on before removing it? Did anything else change that day before or after you messed with the sponge?

Hey! Thank you for following up! (a little big drama, so my posts are lengthy.

Lets start with the sponge, I barely touched it, nothing brutal etc. It actually grew a lot since yesterday! The tube worms there are happily swiping all the area around them and the paly I snapped three polyps from...

When I did that I just took it and ripped off. There was some gunk coming out, of which most I sucked up with the baster. Absolutely nothing unusual, the weird stuff went straight to the filter, lights out - go to sleep.

I did not notice what happened inside until the lights went on.
I di a quick 15% water change after maybe an hour from the lights went on and I have noticed slightly coloring back almost right away (I use ocean water).

Day earlier all corals were super happy, I did not see all of them being so 'pumped' and colorful.

Today:
- Plating monti is getting color back the fastest from all affected - I am not worried about them.
- digi monti (green) was almost snow white in the morning. Now some polyps came out but not fully open, the coloring slowly is coming back (not snow white but pistachio now) - I think it will be alright.
- Purple stylo is all bleached, Green tops, did lose few polyps when I blew the baster gently on it... The rest is hidden in the skeleton (did not fell off). The green tops are very bright. It does not look good...
- Bubble gum digi (I think, forgot the name) is 2/3 dead... meaning the outside lost the color big time, there are polyps feeding, but little, maybe...

bonus (I just checked them all, tried to feed them too)
- war coral is not hungry as usual.
- meteor shower (I forgot about its existence) looks like it seen the ghost. Lost purple coloring and the 'craters' look terribly worrying. This coral was kept aside
- candy cane after great recovery from the incident with war coral now shrunk back again... did not expel anything which is a good sign. I gave it some reefroids (and to the other ones too)
- my dusting worm is all day hidden so deep in its tube I have never seen it before. Did not lose the crown which is a good sign. I believe some of the paly gunk got into its feathers...

So thats how it is right now...

I rather not try messing around with that sponge until the tools will arrive. Then I can take that rock out and clean the paly as well as trim it...

This paly is very toxic, even as unexperienced reefer I can say it straight away. I forgot how strong it is... When I was putting it in first time (my first coral!) I was preparing it in a small container, then I touched accidentally my chick with wet glove and I had numb half of the face for two hours...

But in general I am still in a bit of a shock how the cube reacted!

Hey mate, sorry things took a turn for the worse with your SPS. It’s also possible it could have been caused by the salinity drop from your ATO, depending on how much was dumped. It’s a small tank and they don’t like sudden changes.

I see you have the Tunze 9004 for your new build, I’ve used this skimmer and it’s a great little unit.

it was only around 1.5 litre of RO which would be nothing really, I checked the salinity level and it was down to 1024 (now back to 1025).

I just seem not to have 'luck' to SPS... and it was going so good!

EDIT:

Just finished water testing - this must have been from that paly juice...

Salinity: 1025
PO4: 0.03
NO2: 0.05
NO3: 0 (!)
NH3/4: 0.2
KH: 8
pH: 8.2

I was expecting more ammonia! After seeing the tank. But no spike means... the feather worm is probably still alive ;)

It very well could have been. I've not had any issues myself with palys and I had grandis in most of my tanks in the past. I would frag them in the tank no other corals ever seemed effected. Of course my tanks were not that small, which obviously could be a reason. I could razor blade them off rock with out damaging the polyp, then cut the mat in between polyps. So my technique was also less abrasive. It's possible it was a combo of the two things.

I am 99% sure it was because of the paly...

So today I did faster than planned sponge operation.
It grew visibly larger last two days and started to annoy paly, which started producing more toxin... On top of that paly seemed to start 'running away' from sponge part to the near rocks...

The patient two days ago was like, I had to use baster to force paly to close the polyps:

1683224243977.png

before surgery today it looked like - there was no much need of a baster to see it:

After the surgery:

This is extremely hardy beast :) It will be fine tomorrow. I took it out, all gear on. Placed it in a small container and covered with tank water. Then I 'borrowed' from my Mrs some tools for crafts and methodically cleaned all the sponge off. Actually, there was a little smaller one on the other side too... What I took out was a a size of a tennis ball! Then I cleaned a lot of the paly's body, which had a lot of gunk, some unknown stuff of the slimy yellowish brown color (not directly on the coral, so this must have been there for a while because of the sponge.

I clipped few branches which were trying to go onto the rock, cleaned it using tank water, placed back into the tank and then bastered any fluid/gel coming out from it.

When I was finishing I had a bit of a hope coming to me. Feather worm, which lost the crown two hours ago and I thought will be a goner opened his tube and spat a huge gunk out of it, to me it was exactly the same gunk which was coming out of palys. Fingers crossed! Should get the crown back in about a week... Hopefully.

- Purple styro is gone. I am not even dreaming about having it back :(
- plating monti is getting back some color, it is not that pale as it was when disaster happened.
- digi green is getting better, but the skeleton is clearly visible, not sure if it will make it despite polyps popping more and more, low hopes but life will show.
- the other coral which I really forgot the name and which was the weakest from them all is quite OK! Surprise!
- Candy sucked itself in big time, I lost all progress from last two weeks, but nothing came out of it, it was even eating reefroids last night :) In the morning I blew gently all the corals to ensure no gunk is on it and candy war 'fluffy', not just skeleton (4-5 ribs are visible, however mostly from the adventure it had with hermits and war coral)

So this is it for now. I am not that demolished like yesterday. It is my learning tank! It is better I experienced this first hand now than when the big tank would be full of corals! Surely it hurts to lose the pets, but... I should not after being in freshwater stuff for over two decades :)

and speaking of 90AIO project, I am going with Blade GROW 40W. Thanks @ElementReefer ! After checking newer reviews I think I will go with 40W version! my tank would be more than good as it is 45 cm wide and 45cm deep, 78cm long (90-AIO). GROW should be good to start and then I can always add GLOW :)

Until the next time!

NH3/4: 0.8
NO2: 0.05
NO3: 20
KH: 8.0
Ca: 430
PO4: <0.1
pH: 8.4

All SPS gone, only duncan survived from LPS.
I will try variety of montis this time.
