It happened, my Red Margin Wrasse went carpet surfing yesterday. I have a 75g that's not drilled so I'm using an eshopps overflow. Even though I have the top covered there is about a 1.5" gap in the back that's exposed because of the overflow and the return spout. To get around this I cut some egg crate to use as a cover over those parts. Because of the location of the gap and the egg crate I thought no way a fish could get speed enough to jump out or knock the egg crate off... thought wrong.
I get home yesterday and was preparing to feed the fish that are always huddled in the front of the tank waiting for me when I noticed the Margin (biggest fish in the tank) was not there, that's when I noticed the egg crate...oh no. :(

Sorry you lost it, they have the ability to find the smallest cracks. With wrasses you need a total screen top like Artfully Acrylics makes. They're a little expensive but when you figure in the costs of fish, it's worth it;) Don't let this keep you from keeping these beautiful fish!

Make a screen top to cover the entire tank. I went to home depot and made a custom top using a DAY screen kit for $10

That's what I have now, but there's this section in the back because of the overflow that I can't cover with the DIY screen because the way it's shaped. I'm going to get some acrylic and attach it to the screen permanently so it can't be moved.
