Is it normal to get TONS of crude when you first start a skimmer? I got sooo much green stuff in the cup that I felt like a horrible person for making my fish swim in that gunk.

It may be breaking in and too watery. What kind of skimmer is it? You may need to lower the internal water level so it doesn't fill up too quickly. Is it a thick, dark, dry foam or watery green skimmate?

On the other hand,

If it's tuned and working properly then yes, it may be cleaning all the excess gunk from your tank. I had a skimmer that wasn't working on my frag tank but when I fixed it, it pulled out a lot of gunk at first then slowed down once the excess was skimmed out.

Yes and no! Yes if you have not changed water recently. It should slow down in a few days.
After the first week, if it is watery and the color of pea soup than maybe you need to adjust the air. Some people like it watery and some people like a dryer mix. Also certain additives and foods make the skimmer go crazy for a short time.

Just wait until you get the thick skim mate that smells like a dead body.

I just hooked up this Skimmer Last night. Yukkkk
