Just got my first Macro lens (Canon 100mm), crazy how different the pics look compared with trying to use straight zoom (18-135mm).
to compare pics of plesiastrea
first was shot with zoom

second was shot with the Macro tonight

still working on focus and lighting, but having fun with it.
couple others

(return pump kicked on while that TNT chalice shot was going, kind of messed up the lighting.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who is always willing to give advice, it's been very helpful. Next- adventures in LightRoom....................

Wow what a difference. I have been going back and forth on either a 60 or a 100 mm lens. I was having a conversation yesterday with someone and they really like the 100 over the 60.

Excellent!!! I've got a Canon 100mm f/2.8 IS USM lens but I still take blurry pics. Yours turned out nice and clear. I like it. :)

I finally figured out how to use the live shooting mode on my T6i which previews the shot on the LCD and then you can zoom in and adjust the focus manually, then zoom in again (10x). It really helps me fine tune the focus

Pretty much everyone on here I saw talking about Macros said the same thing. I got mine used on Adorama, $200 off what a new one would be and it looks brand new. Seemed to me that the 60 was for close up shooting of bugs and stuff when you can be right on top of the subject. That plesiastrea shot is from prob 4-6" away from the glass and it is about 2/3 of the way towards the back of the tank (75g).
Also as a frame of reference, that first non-macro shot was cropped big time. Had to cut out about half the frame cause that was as big as I could get with the zoom and still get it to focus. The macro version was full frame, no cropping.

Thank you the info on looking for a used lens. Yes that what the person I was talking to was saying. One can be a little further away with the 100 and still get a great close up.

That plesiastrea is awesome! Got to see it in person yesterday. Great setup and a great dude. Pictures look great. Thanks again for taking time to hang and busting a piece of Monti!
