redfishbluefish recommended that I start a new thread here to tell you about our tank. Well it's an interesting one. It started off as a 45 gal. reef tank with cleaner crew, clown, gramma, pygmy angel, and a mandarin. We have a refugium on the back to help with the copapods for "Mandy." And of course a sump pump and protein skimmer.
Unfortunately, 4 weeks ago, the seamless front glass popped and cracked right down the front, sending a gully washer all over our office, destroying computer equipment, hardwood flooring, and stuff below in the basement. It was a JBJ and about 4 months out of their measly 1 year warranty. Now I've heard that this is a common problem with them, but usually occurring at seams, unlike ours. They've refused all calls and communications from us and the store manager that sold us the tank. So, I don't know what will do there. If anyone has any suggestions on getting them to pay up, I'm open.
Back to our tank. We managed to save all the creatures except for the pygmy angel, which was really sad. The store manager at Optimum Aquarium who's been helping us through all this loaned us a 35 gal. tank to keep everything alive while we sort things out with JBJ. Would highly recommend Optimum Aquarium for anyone in the Atlanta area. He stayed until 11:00pm doing rescue for us. Since the transition we may have lost the gramma. All the fish are naturally skittish and hard to find. Corals survived just fine, as did Mandy, remarkably.
Currently dealing with a Cyana bloom in this tiny tank with little movement. When all is said and done we will probably switch to a Marineland 65 gal, but we are open to suggestions. We figure a bigger tank will be easier to keep in balance, and I like the nice warranty coverage Marineland offers on their tanks. But, again, we are open to suggestions from all of you more experienced than we are.
This wasn't our first saltwater aquarium. We had a 75 gal years ago that we loved. Never had a problem with tank explosion though. I guess there's a first time for everything. I'll post pics when we get red algae under control.
