i would run a qt tank at all times (if i ran one) this would allow for a stable environment for your fish and coral you put into the qt. when theres no live stock in the tank you can dose pure ammonia to keep a good cycle without having to ghost feed or have rotten shrimp in it.

pure ammonia? Won' t that harm the fish and coral I'm putting into it?

And btw....you don't have a Qt? I was thinking as a responsible reef owner I HAD to. Do you have different thoughts?

we all do things differently. I don't qt. actually now I don't have a use for a qt lol im doing a serious downgrade from an all out system down to a 1.5 gallon reef vase lol

as for the ammonia, you add it when there is no live stock in your qt. its to keep the cycle going. you stop adding it the day or 2 days before you plan to add fish to the qt. dose to 2ppm. before you leave to buy the fish test to ensure its at 0ppm, do a water change to bring nitrates down, then go get your fish. doing this will keep a strong cycle in your tank.

you can also dose bottled bacteria and ammonia such as dr tims one and only but that's more expensive.
