Should my first major equipment purchase be a skimmer or a RODI unit? It will probably be a month before I could purchase the other.
On a side question, what RODI unit would be good for in home use as well as aquarium use?

RODI unit definitely...as long as the skimmer won't be long in following...

I got mine from socaltropicalfishoutlet.com.

The "waste water" (which is actually good filtered water that just didn't go through the RO membrane or DI resin) would make good drinking water...I wouldn't recommend drinking dionized water.

Skimmer is a major purchase as its going to hurt the old wallet. RO/DI units don't tend to cost nearly that much.
But RO would be a close second.

RODI for sure. If you have to wait on the skimmer you can do extra water changes if needed. I would not put any TAP water on my tank.. Stuff in there you will never get out.

RO/DI unit imo for sure. A skimmer your tank can go without for a month if your just getting started, water changes without RO/DI can cause phosphates and other unwanted waste to get to concentrations that will absorb into rock and your sand bed from the tap water I am assuming your using now for water changes. Once this stuff absorbs it slowly releases providing a breeding ground for unwanted hair algae, and other types of unsightly algae that feed off the slow release of phosphates and silicates from the rock into the water column and subsequently used up by the hair algae to grow. This is only however if your tap water already has these things in it, some people use it without an RO/DI unit and they are fine. If you plan to do any type of saltwater tank a RO/DI unit should be your first purchase imo, it can save you from a world of head aches down the road.

Thanks for the quick responses. I'll get the RODI unit first and do frequent wanted changes until I can get a skimmer. Thanks again everyone!

Why wouldn't it be advisable to drink the DI water? If I shouldn't drink it is there any other practical use for it to sell my wife on? It easier when I can say "but we can use it for this also" lol.

Lol I told my wife the same thing. We can use it as drinking water!

You can drink it, but since pretty much all of the minerals and nutrients have been removed it provides pretty much nothing as far as a nutritional value. RO water I think is used for drinking water in some cases. However RODI is not. its all up to you.

Also, I found it to taste rather odd...

Add up a month of buying RODI water from a LFS. Then multiply by 12. Should pay for itself in due time. Tack on the time and gas as well to travel back and fourth.

You don't want to drink the water because it has no mineral content. If you drink it your body will actually leech your own minerals back into the water
Not good

What I do is use a valve before my DI and just drink the RO water. Run enough for 5 gallons and refill when the last goes in the fridge.

Essentially I could setup the drain line to use as drinking water? I guess I need to buy a TDS meter as well so I could test our tap water vs the drain water to compare the quality. Is a TDS meter an online purchase or could I find one at lowes?

Another thing you should look for is a good refractometer. I'd stay away from the plastic hydrometers. If you can afford a digital one then it would be better.

Exactly. That's what I would do with the drain line. ...and that can be used to sell your wife. I use my drain line for anything I normally use water for...drinking water, washing clothes (though I doubt your wife would get excited about buying a filter to wash clothes with).
