First Reef Tank "for my son"

welcome33.gif

Hello and welcome. I use a scrubber for the corners. Here's a link.

Practice good aquarium husbandry by doing regular water changes, keep the substrate clean, don’t overfeed the fish, ensure your skimmer is running at an optimal level and rinse out filter socks and sponges on a regular basis.
Some cleaner crew to help control it are : Cerith snails, Nerite snails and Trochus snails and also Astraea snails are effective at removing diatoms.
ty for the sound advice. I do not have a skimmer (yet). I have been feeding very, very lightly. Going to clean some of the sand when I do water change. More snails are the next things that will go in. Good reminder to clean the filter components.

Hello! This forum has been a huge help so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm keppy from the Seattle area and I put this tank together over the past few weeks and stocked it this past Friday. It took about 7 days to fully cycle. My toddler can't do much yet but he loves his 'nemos'. Everyone in the tank seems to love the spirulina frozen brine shrimp cubes from Hikari. I haven't done a water change yet, still coming off the end of the cycle. I have topped off with tap water once. I did not use a RODI unit, but have one now and will use it for the first water change and next top off.

Not too concerned about the diatoms (yet) but if anyone has tips I'll take them! Also I find it hard to get the glass clean down by the sand especially in tight spots by the rocks if anyone has a technique for that.

Initial equipment:
Fluval Evo 13.5
stock light
stock pump & heads
stock filter WITH foam
live rocks from LFS
live sand from LFS (forgot brand)
aquavitro salinity for reefs salt mix with tap water
Penn-Plax 100w heater with no external thermo :grimacing-face:

Stocking list:
5 hermits (mostly blues I think)
2 astrea snails
2 amphiprion ocellaris
1 zoanthid frag
1 ricordia frag

Light schedule:
White from roughly 9am-8pm
blue from roughly 8am-9am & 8pm-9pm
no timer currently done manually

Welcome to R2R! Wonderful little tank, you'll enjoy the EVO models.

Welcome! Glad you joined.

Two sand tips:
- deeper sand helps keep me from trying to scrape my lower silicone sealant
- keep aquascape/rock further away from glass
---- if I have to go in with scraper at angle, then I need more room
---- some areas of our back & side glass can not get cleaned due to inaccessibility so have coralline and some coral growths on glass in those areas

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID). What you have above you might even consider just copying over to new thread in other area of Forum because you have so much detail already! Thanks for photos!

This might help you find people local to you in Seattle:

This is a good reference book type online article I still review:

TY for the tips, will shift some rocks away from glass when I change water tomorrow. Also will double check that no rocks are set too low in the sand--sand is 2 inches deep.
And yes I was wondering if I should copy over to a build thread or keep posting here--I'll likely start a build thread.

Small update I've got the RODI unit running and used it for top off today. Mixing water for first change tomorrow. I also dialed back the lighting a bit--just shortened the day a little and did longer blue light period at night. Diatoms seem to be receding, zoa seems to like it better.

Some things to consider:

In my experience, the stock light included with AIO setups like yours will be inadequate for coral growth.

As a general rule of thumb, you try for 1 pound of live rock per gallon. Based on the picture, you may not have enough live rock in the tank. If room is an issue, you may want to remove the decorative items and use the space for live rock. Decorative items do not offer anything in terms of contributing to the tank ecology.

Yes, definitely use RODI moving forward.

Please be faithful in your husbandry. This is particularly important with small tanks like yours. Small tanks are prone to big swings in water chemistry. It is important to do FAITHFUL, WEEKLY 20% water changes in addition to other husbandry practices such as keeping your filters clean, churning your sand and manual removal of algae.

Good luck and post any questions!

Welcome! As some other people have sort of hinted at, your lighting schedule is weird. Since it’s not possible to ramp them up/down, and each channel has to be manually turned on/off, I would recommend getting a smart plug and setting up a schedule running a 10-12 hour photo period with both blues and whites on the entire time. If you leave both switched on, the smart plug will then turn them off and on based on your schedule. Given that the light with both channels on is already pretty underpowered, your corals are going to need both channels on at the same time to get enough light. If you then want to manually shut off the whites for a while when viewing the tank, you can.
Anyway, hope that makes sense, and again, Welcome!!

I did get a mechanical timer plug for the lights and started a 10 and 1/2 hour photo period with full lights the whole time. I'm not sure but I think it may be a bit too much light for the zoa. Someone earlier hinted that the light might be too intense, so maybe I need a dimmer. Not sure just put it on blue light for half the day today and it seems to be less upset/shrunken and closed.

Planning to do a proper update with pictures soon.
