Hi everyone! I'm planning to start my first saltwater aquarium build and have a few questions that I've been stuck on. I just bought a 90 gallon Oceanic tech tank set that came with a stand on craigslist and after reading up on maintaining a reef tank I would really like to run the Triton method.
Right now I'm in the market for a pre-built sump that would fit inside of the narrow stand that I currently have. I know that people say that sumps are easy to make but I'm VERY BAD when it comes to making things myself unfortunately lol. I really like the Triton34 sump by Trigger Systems but the interior space underneath my stand is limited by the supporting posts on each end so I only have a maximum of 13" width for the sump. I can technically fit a 14 inch wide sump into the stand but that would require me to unscrew the center support post in order to get the sump inside before screwing it back in. But this is kind of sketchy for me because the stand is made of particleboard and is pretty old. I was thinking of going custom but the cost and the slow turnaround time is what's keeping me from pulling the trigger.
I am thinking of using the Bashsea Biofuge 36"x14"x16" but the description says that the refugium section is third in the sump while the skimmer is first. What are your thoughts on this sump and would it be possible to just make the skimmer section a refugium? If not, what would be my options? Thanks for your time!

Welcome to R2R!!! I can't speak for the Triton method as I don't use it, but i will agree with above, keep your first tank simply so you r successful and enjoy it.

Welcome to R2R! :) Have you considered getting rid of the old stand and getting or building a new stand that will fit the sump you want? That old stand will have to support over 700 pounds.

Welcome to R2R! Best of luck to you! Make sure that what ever route you take, you don’t cut corners and it is best to not skimp on equipment, or you will end up paying more money in the long run to replace the cheaper, insufficient and insignificant equipment originally purchased. Do your research and explore your options! Make sure that the stand can support the weight of your aquarium and it’s contents. Make sure the floor can support the weight as well when selecting a place for the tank. Try to keep your tank away from heaters/AC vents. Also, setting up an aquarium next to a window is never advisable due to algae growth and heat build up. Lighting will ultimately, be one of your most expensive pieces of equipment as well as a key component to aesthetics, coral color and health. As for a skimmer, if it is rated for say a 125 gallon tank, I would go with the next size up to optimal efficiency and operation. Refugiums are a great addition to any saltwater aquarium. They provide a safe have for pods, polychaete worms, and other delicate inverts. They can provide a wonderful location for macroalgae and mangroves. Added biological filtration from the use of live rock and aragonite ( deep sand beds increases both anaerobic as well as aerobic bacteria). sumps are ideal as a way of providing the presence of a refugium. They are ideal for increasing water volume and a place to house equipment so that it doesn’t provide an eye sore in your main tank.
Good luck to you...

I am thinking about getting a saltwater set up for my grandchildren (13&11) they have a freshwater now , something around 50 gal . I don’t want to spend thousands $ . Any help on getting started with a new but not high price set up .Any help on what web site or where to buy would be very helpful . We live in Vermont and other than Petco there is not much else around here, Thanks for your advice in advance!,,
