Ok so I want to start my first saltwater tank and I was thinking a 27 gallon nano reef, 20 lbs of live sand with maybe 25 to 30 lbs of live rock. Other than that i'm not not sure. I know I need a heater and thermometer that's a given, i'm not sure how many powerheads I need or if I will need a filter or protein skimmer. Any advice would be helpful all the articles I find are on smaller nano reefs but I would like a slightly larger one so I can keep a few more fish.

Welcome to R2R! You will find a lot of helpful people here that will be very willing to assist you with all your questions about starting your new tank! What are your plans for the tank ..... fish only, softies, mixed? What type of tank, will you be using a sump? The equipment and flow that you need will vary with what you are planning to do with the tank. The more information you can provide the more everybody will be able to help you!
