What am I looking for when it comes to cleaning and maintenance
Its just a nano fluval skimmer for my 20g
But I have a steady 25ppm for nitrates and id like to drop them so this is the only thing left I think I can do.

Most of the maintenance is just emptying and cleaning out the cup and how often that will happen depends on how quickly it gets full. Mine doesn't pull to much stuff from the water so I only empy/clean mine about once every 2 weeks (every week is probably a more realistic expectation).
You will also want to completely clean the body and the pump a few times a year.
Overall IMO they're fairly low maintenance compared to most other things in this hobby.
