First SPS Coral

I just got my first piece of Acro... it is a little bit of a test though since I’m new to the hobby and my tank has only up for 16 months. I have some lps, softies and zoas with no issues... it was only $10 haha.. anyone have an idea what it is ? My lfs told me and I forgot. It’s nothing special and I’m going to alter my rocks so it’s sitting on a frag rack for now. Also I noticed my calcium was under 400 during this weeks water change am I correct to assume sps corals consume minerals faster?

I'm 99% certain that's a bird's nest, not an acro. But regardless, they are nice corals. Best of luck!

Looks like a green stylophora, SPS but not quite an acro . I wouldn't worry TOO much about a small frag eating up a lot of, just keep up on testing and dose accordingly. Moderate light and flow should make it happy. Welcome to the addictive world of SPS!

You'll want to keep an eye on that calcium, but also watch your alkalinity. Very important for SPS corals if you plan on getting more. As others have mentioned that's either a seriatopora (birdsnest) or stylophora, both of which are hardy SPS

Thanks guys! Yeah alk has ALWAYS been lower than perfect.. I don’t do any dosing. I have been looking through the forums on that exact topic.

Would be a good idea to dose alk then. Don't increase it rapidly as stable alk > good alk. You want to test frequently while you raise it to keep track of it and once it's between 8-12 dkh you want to test frequently and dose it according to your findings.

Thanks for the tip. My lfs (which is really a coral shop with the obligatory marine fish) has always told me stability is key. I need to break down and get a good alk checker

I use a hanna checker and even though it's a bit pricier than some other tests it really makes life so much easier.
