First sps.

Hi all

My friend broken a piece of his monti and he said i could have it. i have never kept sps just softies. So i said go on then il put it in my tank and il see what the outcome is.

If im being honest not got a clue what to look out for but its been in my tank 2 days and iv been reading a little and i have noticed the white edge. And a little bit on the actual plate. Any udeas on your experiance if this is a fail?

Also are the little dots on the plate (slightly darker) when you zoom in on the picture the polyps and if so do they look closed? Dont know of thats a silly question considering my light are out.

Just to clarify i dont intend on going down the sps route however i do like the plate coral so i thought id give it a crack and try add a bit of diverty to my reef.

Montis are as easy as they come. They can tolerate lower par too (not sure of your lighting, but it should be OK). Just keep your parameters in check & it should thrive.

You should dip every frag before putting it in your tank. The white could be where you were handling it with your fingers. That's happened to a few of my caps, pressing it into a rock, and the top section goes white, from the pressure of my finger. Like stated above, simple coral to keep. Just let it do its thing.

Yeah, don't sweat it. I got a piece the size of a nickel from a buddy about a year ago and now it's over 10" across! I've had some weird white spots come and go, it's fallen into the sand from where it was glued, it's been broken and fragged to friends. These things are awesome easy to keep usually!
But yes, always dip, even if you "know the tank" they came from. If nothing else it's a good habit.
Just let it chill and it'll prob be just fine.
