What kind of tank are you planning?Your livestock will determine your lighting needs. As far as temp LEDs run much cooler than halides. I don't know how they compare to compact flourescents. Try to get the best lights you can. They make a huge difference in coral growth and the beauty of the tank.

12g Nanoreef. Zooanthids, Ricordia, Star Polyps, Acans and two clownfish. CF Lighting, 75% actinic blue, 25% 10,000k white.

With a reef tank, if you're keeping sps's, you'll need more intense lighting. With LPS and soft corals, you can get away with less. Halides are good for sps but expensive to run and hot.

I've heard bad things about the marineland light. IMO the best bang for your buck would be the Aqua Illumination Vega color unit. You could keep sps in the top and Los in the bottom. If you ever get a bigger tank than you can just add more vega modules and link them together. You'll pay, but you'll get your money's worth with a great quality light.

I have the marineland reef LED, while the lights have a good balance of quality contruction and 1 W led's, the power is not enough for anemones or SPS. I had to add a 4 ft 3W LED strip with mine. I will be changing out the marineland LED's as soon as I can justify the cost.

That Vega looks awsome. I may set up my filtration first then make this my last piece. Would I need a 36in one or a smaller one?

Marineland LED are trash,,have 2 of them in garage busted a 3rd went into the trash..
No i never paid for any of these but the few i have gotten sent to me are toast. Ive taken them apart and well they probly cost $2 bucks to build.

Kessil has some nice options and are priced well.. I own 4 350's and 3 150s and only ONE problem and they are sending me a new light. Even after 2 years of having light. Good luck getting a marineland light replaced. Not saying they wont, just try getting ahold of someone who can..You will spend more on phone calls than the light is worth.

Get a couple reef radiance LED lights. I just got one and it covers a great area and is such a simple plug and play light. The price is great and the color you get is good as well. BUT I've only had my light for a few days so can't tell what the coral growth and coloration is yet.

I recommend the Maxspect Razor (160w 16k). Simple to use, good for a beginner. And it will still be good as you get more experienced. Good price as well.

For a 36", one vega will not be enough spread, and two will be costly.
