any improvements i could make with the plumbing? return is the a up and over pvc return. this is my first tank so i want to make sure everything is right the first time. the side towards the middle chamber will be capped for now but in a few months i would like to make it a small algae scrubber. skimmer will be in first section up on some egg crate to get it to the right depth. any advise is welcome. also don't mind the tank i still have to paint the background.

Any reason why you didn't just go straight down with it?

It really needs to be straight down with no bends or fittings for best flow. Why not place the tee so the straight through run is inline with the overflow and the side oultet feeds the algae scrubber? You will have less problems and lessen the chance of flood from something lodging in the horizontal part of the tee.

I would drop it straight down and then in the middle chamber put a protein skimmer and your return on the opposite side make sure you put a valve so you can adjust the flow on the return side are you not using a filter sock

I will only be running 300-400 gallons through it and I thought about running the t like that but not enough flow would go through the algae scrubber then. I never thought of something jamming in the t. Maybe if I put a cover on the overflow it would keep anything big out of the plumbing?
