Hi! I want to get into the hobby and need some help selecting my first reef tank - my early 50th bday present from my hubby and son. We are wrapping up some home renovations and I have the spot prepped and almost ready.

I really like the dimensions of the Red Sea Max S-400 - biggest I can reasonably fit 41” long and we like the 61” total height - but I want a refugium and there is no room for one. My husband likes the retro style tank band around the top and the light bar but those are not decision making factors. I also need a chiller, as I am in FL and we keep the house relatively warm. I plumbed my spot for a RO filter and drain line so I don’t need an ATO. I’m starting to think the chiller needs to go in the closet on the other side of the wall with the RO filter.

Yesterday we looked at the waterbox and I really like it! I can use the ATO reservoir for a refugium. I like that everything is glass and seems accessible. It is 3” shorter than the RS S400 and the display tank is 1” shorter 24” vs 25” but it seems to have other benefits. Also when you walk in the front door you will see the side of the tank (so I’m hoping for one powerhead on the other side like a peninsula tank) and the RS S400 is 27.5” including the trim, while the WB 100.3 is only 24” wide.

I really like the waterbox but I keep going back to the dimensions of the RS S-400 size wise. I have 55” from a new cabinet to the edge of a doorframe (door is opening towards the tank) and I keep trying to fit a 48” long tank there but it would just be too big . I keep trying to convince hubby and me that we can fit the WB 130.4 there - room for a dosing station in the cabinet and bigger overall tank and sump and wow!

The waterbox 100.3 sump 25.4 g which is almost twice the volume of the RS S400 sump 13 g and I want SPS corals so I think that’s important. The WB 100.3 total volume is 97.2 g, and the RS S400 total volume is 106 g. I know I get to select equipment on the WB and the S-400 comes with everything. I’m not sure how difficult it is to upgrade S-400 components over time or if you’re stuck with Red Sea replacement parts - from what I have read there is flexibility.

I welcome any recommendations. I’ve also considered the Red Sea Reefer 250 but it is only 65 total gallons, 3” shorter than the WB - which is 3” shorter than the RS S400. I know maintenance is easier with a shorter tank but we really want taller and I will be on a stool anyway. Anything else I should consider - besides custom? Everything I read seems split on WB vs RS. Thanks!!!

Hi there! Welcome to R2R. I also can't help with questions you are asking.

Welcome to R2R!!! Unfortunately it sounds like to me your kinda stuck with what’s out there unless you go totally custom!! It’s not a bad idea and you get want you want. I would price it out with a builder and weigh your options! As for a chiller I also live in Florida (central) and I don’t run a chiller. Keep my house at 77 and my water temps are fine. Depending on how warm your house is I would save the money on the chiller and put towards the tank!!

Welcome to R2R!!! I can't speak for the Red Sea or Waterbox setups as I have a different brand, but both are high quality. I will say the more total water capacity the more forgiving the tank is when things happen.

Welcome to R2R! I agree, have a custom tank made that fits your exact needs :) plenty of custom manufacturers out there that can make exactly what will work for you:)

Welcome to R2R!!! As you are already finding out, this is a good place for information. Waterbox and RedSea both make quality tanks so you should be pleased with either one of their aquariums. I also live in Florida and don't use a chiller anymore. We're glad you're here!

Welcome to R2R. My buddy used these guys and so will i after my renovation is complete. They will build it however you like, do all of the drilling and so on.

Good luck
Matt

Wow! Good to know about the chiller. We are more like 78 when we are home and 80 when we are gone but we can leave it at 78 all day. I think 77 would be too chilly. We are in south Florida. I just built out some boxes for the water box 130.4 and am still working on my husband for that one. That would give me room for a dosing system which from what I read I think I will eventually end up with in the long run.

The 48 fits with 7” off the cabinet, 2” off the door frame, and 7” off the wall. I’m thinking a powerhead on the right side and a powerhead on the bottom left corner of the back because I want a clear view of the side when you walk in the front door. On the other side of the wall I would have the RO filter, chiller (if needed), and a battery back up. I’m quickly losing closet space.

I only get one shot at this huge decision!!! Leaning towards the WB 130.4 I think it fits! Though the 100.3 would look less squished. I guess the main difference is room for the dosing system which is important because I want SPS corals.

Also, I want a chiller in case we get a hurricane and the power goes out. I can’t keep the a/c going with my generator but I can keep the chiller running. Just a thought.

Last hurricane my power did go out! But I put frozen water bottles in to keep temp stable!!

What do you have?
I have a 120 gal Aqueon tank, and then added everything to it.

My next tank will probably be a Planet Aquarium tank.
