i will be receiving my first order of some fish,zoanthids-solomon, green hairy mushroom, and a couple of feather dusters. i don't know what to exspect. just a little nervous. i read good things and bad about ordering off the internet. i usually get my creatures from my lfs but the one fish i wanted woulod have been 100$. i got 4 fish, zoanthids, mushroom, and long tenticle anemone for 140$. i was also wondering what i should use as a dip for the zoanthinds and if i should dip the mushroom? i have read about some of the dips you can get at lfs and i read about peroxide and a chemical you can get at lowes caled Bayer bug killer. What should i use.

This is the Bayer

I have also heard of the hydrogen peroxide dip. Coral rx and revive are also popular.

Not 100% sure, but there are very few corals that I have read about it having bad effects on.

Please think twice about putting your brand new coral shipment into "Outdoor Bug Killer". Spend the $3 extra bucks on some Seachem "Reef Dip Coral Disinfectant" or Coral RX. This might be the craziest thing I have heard/seen since joining this site 3 days ago.

Welcome to the site :)

Bayer is the most effective thing we have found at removing unwanted pests in a dip. I have personally dipped over 40 acropora with no loss. I had worse results with coral rx as it smoked an ora hawkins.

If you want to use Bayer I suggest reading a thread for proper procedures. Even with those guidelines I suggest rinsing 5 times more than the suggested amount.

The way Bayer works is that it attacks the central nervous system. Since corals have no central nervous system they don't even realize its there. The only coral I have read about being effected by this dip is acropora hyacthinus (red planet)

Do your homework before trying this, or commenting about how crazy it is.

I tried the peroxide dip on my gonapora, my first time, it worked. Been 1.5 month after and its super happy extends its arms out very far and flows in the water. Had I not dipped it would've died, it had some brown fungus growing on the middle of it and those arms are now gone.

Check out this article I wrote for my website a while back, Ordering aquatic life online ? | Reef Right Marine Aquarium Consultant and Reef First Aid

As for dipping your coral in outdoor bug killer, that's a horrible idea. As I've said before, things like Vodka, Baking Soda, Sugar, etc-etc, don't belong in a reef aquarium. I would suggest dipping your new corals in Brightwell Aquatics Coral RX. IMHO, the use of Bayer bug killer, as a coral bath, is going to equal bad news, sooner or later.

This is cute.... Keep dumping your two part in your tank..... Fyi part 2 is baking soda....

I think I will take the advice of Randy Holmes Farley over you anyways.

Sorry to hear that; say good bye to all your clean-up crew crustaceans arthropods, amphipods etc...

Do you have any experience with using Bayer? I have used it with 0 side effects. As far as I know it is the most used treatment for Red bugs and aefw. There is nothing wrong with using products like this in our hobby. The op is not the first and won't be the last to use it. As far as baking soda vinegar sugar and etc.... you're kidding right? I would use all these in my tank along with pickling lime mag flake Epson salts driveway heat etc and never think twice. I know people a lot smarter than me came up with these diy recipes and have tested them so why you are afraid of them baffles me!

I have not heard of Bayer being used other than a sps dip for red bugs and aefw. I hope it turns out well for the op.

Maybe you didn't read the instructions to the Bayer. After dipping, you swish it off really good in clean water in one bowl (you will see all kinds of bugs at the bottom of the bowl. Then place in another bowl with clean water and let it soak for a while. I've done this many times in the past, and my cleanup crew, etc. is very healthy. Everybody has their preferred way. Just stick to what you're comfortable with, be it something you get at a lfs or in my case, Home Depot.

Oh, I also have a koi pond. This winter it had a terrible case of hair algae. I treat my pond for algae by using Baquacil Oxidizer (step 2). It also helps heal fish owies that can show up after a cold winter. Now you can't just throw it in, you need to know your exact pond volume because too little it's not effective, and too much will kill the fish. I know my pond's volume because I metered it when I filled it for the first time.

Bayer is the same way. Used right and you will have a really effective killer of bugs. I've been happy with it. I've had zoas whose pollops were closed when I put it in the Bayer wash, to have them open upon taking them out.

Bayer has been recognized by many great hobbyists as the least stressful dip method. Yes you have to use it properly, just as you would have to use any other coral dip.

This thread is the first time Ive ever heard of bayer being used... Ive been all over several forums... why have I not seen it before if so many people use it?

ok just did a tag search and found a lot of threads on it.. lol funny I never heard of it though but now its all over the place... still dont understand how this can be used safely...
