Hello R2R Community,

I have some areas in my tank with this sticky substance. I can usually blow it off the rocks but some areas are harder to remove. Corals are looking great and it's not everywhere just in pockets. See attached image.

I have an im10 and a few corals. The tank is about 8 months old now. No fish just 2 hermit crabs and I feed twice a week prior to 1 gal wc. I am using gfo and carbon as well.

I didn't test the tank recently but can run a few tests tonight. Just trying to figure out what this is so I can approach it the right way.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kinda looks like diatoms. But they should be used up by now. Add any new equipment lately.

Hi ReefLover

No new equipment. However, in my research I thought it might be Calothrix. Do you think that might be right?

I guess just manual removal and keep up my water changes.

thanks

Hmm could be...thats another type of cyano. Here's a thread with a lil info on dealing with it.https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrJ4NaOb9RdFREAHUuJnIlQ;_ylu=X3oDMTBqbTkwNTdsBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDcnVybARpdAM-/RV=2/RE=1574232078/RO=11/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.reef2reef.com%2fthreads%2fdinoflagellates-please-help.347483%2f/RK=2/RS=ypwl6Kiubok5bWq_ix_ktj81QAQ-
From what im reading just looks like a new tank phase.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I also appreciate the insight. It's certainly not taking over the tank. I think I'm just going to stay the course for now and avoid chemiclea or any treatments at this point. Hoping to get some coraline growth soon once I get rid of this sludgy stuff.

Welcome to R2R!

I cannot make out what that is, but you should be able to siphon it out and stay the course.

With such a light biolad, I would be careful about GFO --especially if you are not measuring phosphate with a Hanna ULR Checker. You also mention carbon. Carbon as in granular activated carbon and not carbon dosing (vinegar/vodka/etc) correct?

Lastly, your corals would really appreciate some fish poop. Take the plunge, I say.

Have fun.

Get a pair of clownfish. They will be more than happy to poo on your corals.

I am using Granular Activated Carbon, that's correct. I am looking at getting a captive raised blue neon goby. Have the quarantine tank all ready for him just need to place the order. Trying to keep the bio load light. To be honest, I'm surprised how much algae I have in the tank with just 2 hermit crabs and light feeding. My goal is to get some acropora in the tank eventually so want to wipe out the algae all together.

Right now I have acans, chalice, zoas, rics, and a cyphaestrea. Thinking about adding some Monti Digitas and other easier SPS to the tank.

It's good to be back in the hobby. I was in it when I was younger and then took a long break.
