Growing up, I watched my dad maintain a freshwater aquarium, saltwater aquarium and a coy pond and watching those aquariums grow as I grew was definitely a highlight when I was a kid. He had discus in the fresh water tank which had to be about 120 gallons, and all sorts of things in the saltwater.. From what I can remember, we had clown fish, seahorses, sea stars, shrimp, sea urchins, anemones, and probably some other things I cant remember. This was back in the 90's. Fond memories. Now that I have children of my own, I would love to share this with them and introduce them to the joys of having an aquarium at home.

With that said, I have no idea what I'm doing.

I decided to join here because I could watch a thousand YouTube videos and read dozens of books, but there's nothing like a community of people that you can turn to for help, so I'd like to ask you guys some questions.

What's the best source for knowledge and information on getting started?

I guess I should start there, because I'm kinda reaching and grabbing bits and pieces of information from all over the web, and it'd be nice to see a comprehensive guide (or even book) that's good for launching with "information you wish you would have had when you started" type of advice.

My setup

I purchased this 75 gallon Edge Rimless aquarium by Dee Blue, and I do have some concerns.

How is this brand? It looks like good quality, but I'm curious if anyone else has had experience with this aquarium brand. Also, with that floodgate being in the center of my aquarium, am I losing valuable real estate? I feel like this design might annoy me, but I'm open to some cool reef design ideas around it. Any good examples? I'm thinking about making it into, say.. A big pillar of coral, maybe.

How is this sump?

My local aquarium shop recommended it and I'm just curious. Again, any one have experience with this brand? Also, I hear it's a good idea to use a sump that's as big as the aquarium you're building. Any truth/benefit to that?

Sorry if this is getting wordy, so I'll end it in a minute, but I have a lot that I want to know. lol

I'll need a light, and I'm leaning towards LED's. I want something that's going to really allow my tank to flourish, has a nice spectrum, and lights this size tank pretty well. I'm not necessarily trying to "budget" shop, but also not trying to spend excessively either, but I want things done right, if that makes any sense. I want something to light up the aquarium nice and vibrantly.

So I think that's it for now. Thank you in advance for checking me out and taking the time to on-board me! Let's go!

Welcome!First let me say thanks for joining this great forum. The people here are great and soon you'll see links and info from fellow reefers welcoming you. This is the best place for you to start your reefing journey as you may already know.
I have a 28 deep blue and if you check out my build thread on it you can see how I started hiding my over flow with the rock work.IMO it's a well built tank from the looks of it.
Best of luck and welcome again.

Welcome to R2R. You're going to love it here. Here is a link for you to check out on starting up. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/the-supreme-guide-to-setting-up-a-saltwater-reef-aquarium.138750/ You could also check out some of the other sticky threads in this forum as well. https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/new-to-saltwater-reef-aquariums-post-here.130/ Don't hesitate to ask questions. Best advice you'll see on this forum but is the hardest to follow? Take it slow. This hobby will test your patience as we all want a beautiful tank with lots of fish and colorful corals. Take your time and it will save you money but most importantly, it will save the lives of your fish and corals. Have fun.

Welcome home, you will love it here!

Nice start, keep us posted with your build with tons of pics! :)

Welcome to reef2reef. I found the brs 52 weeks of reefing youtube series helpful as a start. Researching questions that I came up with while watching the videos led me to reef2reef. The combination of both gave me the confidence to dive in and start my own reef. A lot of awesome and helpful people here.
