I recently picked up a 210 gallon tank so today I walked into my LFS to check out some possible fish, while talking to an employee there, he suggested to me that clown tangs are less likely to get Ich than powder blue tangs, I'm interested in both fish but know I cant have them both since they are both of the same genus, I just wanted to hear some opinions because from what I have heard the clown tang is extremely prone to Ich. Please give me your opinion on the topic, while I know that both fish are difficult to keep, I just want the one with the best chance of survival and one that doesnt completely crash my new tank, I have a QT setup at all times but just want to hear what other people think about this?

Clown tangs are extremely aggressive and get really huge. It is a beautiful fish but not desirable due to the above, thus a relatively cheap fish. I would avoid it. PBT is a very nice tang and get large but will not outgrow a 210 gal. However, It is a tang that shoud be add later rather than earlier to a tank, IMO/IME.

Yeah I know the Clown tangs can get huge and from what other people have told me are the king of Ich, thats why I was really suprised when the guy at the store told me they werent as bad as PBTs.

PBT’s are notorious ich magnets. Agree with LFS, more so than the clown. ALso agree though that the clown is super aggressive. PBT can be also but not as bad as the clown. HAving had both many years ago, I would go with PBT and ensure he’s eating really well and ich free after QT. He should be one of the last to go in. If you are adding another tang on the aggressive side like a purple or yellow tang, I’d add together. If other tang is going to be on the more docile side(for tangs) like a Kole, Naso or hippo blue, I’d add one of those first and the PB as later after as you can. Good luck and enjoy...
