Hi! Me again lol!
This may be a really odd question but I lost a clown weeks ago and I never could figure out what caused it. But I recieved my 2 new quarentined clowns today and I noticed on my camera that when the lights went off and the room was completely dark they were darting around and running themselves into the walls of tank. This was the moment where I started to question if fish can see in complete darkness. I started to wonder if this is what happened to my previous clown. I watched a couple of videos of spinal injuries and mine was acting the same way the morning he passed but wasn't like that when I went to bed and had no visible signs of illness and I had him in the tank for over 2 months. I lost 3 clowns in this tank. My only survivor was my blenny. He cozys up in his rock for bed once the lights start dimming for the night.
So what's does everyone think? Do you provide your fish with light? Leave your lights on moonlight all night?

I use a LSM with the Apex programmed to my area, not as a fish night light, but to replicate the moon. New moon, the tank is dark. Full moon, you can somewhat see.

I provide my fish with moonlight from sunset until midnight, but in all honesty most of them (including the clownfish) are fast asleep by then. Only the nocturnal fish are out and about at night.
Do you have some sort of dim ambient light in the room? TV, Night light, kitchen stove light etc? My room is black out dark at night.

Other than occasional computer use and some moonlight through the window next to the tank, it's very dark at night.

I use moon lights on my tanks but I acknowledge that they are for me, not the fish. I like to see in the tank even when it is dark. I also like how the lights adjust throughout the month based on the phase of the moon.

LSM is an accessory to the Apex controller, that comes with LEDs for moon light. Once programmed, the moon lights will turn on when the moon comes up outside, and turn off when the moon sets. It also varies the intensity in relation to how bright the moon is throughout the month. Not perfect, but pretty close. If it's a full moon, I can kind of see what going on in the tank. No moon, pitch black.

Do you have corals and if so does it have any effect on them? Also does anyone know if moonlight makes algea growth worse?

Yes I have corals. I cannot say that I have notice any positive or negative effects on them. There are some studies that suggest that coral spawning can be correlated to moon phase. As for algae growth, I have not noticed anything notable. The moon lights are very dim and very blue which is not generally great for algae growth.

Awesome! Thank you! I may give it a try for a few days maybe just until the new clowns get used to the tank.

VERY dim. In fact so dim I actually reached out to support because I thought they were broken. Nope. They are just a very week led. In my opinion, I would go back in time and tell my slightly younger self ‘save the money, not worth it’.

Yes, they can be very dim at times. Mine, on a full moon, can be quite bright. Nothing you are going to grow coral with but that is not the point for me. I just like seeing the tank activity at night.
