Fish and water

I was more interested in Saltwater fish, but if the answer is different for fresh water fish, it would be kool to know the answer for both.

Freshwater fish get water through osmosis and saltwater fish drink water. In one of my evolutionary biology classes they talked about fish kidneys, and they think fish started out in freshwater environment like the early oceans. Then as the oceans became more salty the fish moved further into freshwater rivers. Eventually some went back to the oceans, which were closer to the salinity of what we have now, and evolved into the saltwater species.

After reading your post, the 1st thing I thought about was the Molly How does it become a fish that gets water by osmosis to fish that drinks water? I want to acclimate a fresh water Molly to my saltwater aquarium.

Some species can take some species can't. With Mollies you add salt very slowly. I don't have personal experience so can't comment on exact time frames. I know some people think they don't truly acclimatize and slowly die over weeks to months instead of "living" in saltwater.
