Fish Broker???

There are minimum dollar amounts you need to attain in order to place the order...generally 500.00. There is a 15% fee for sourcing livestock through specific channels....again, no DOA or 24 hour guarantee on fish, corals, or inverts....shipping, box charges, and heat or cold packs are always your responsibility. You have to have a tax I'd and business license to buy from them....you can get great stuff till your orders reach 5k or more per week ( so no bounce mushrooms or whatever is hot at that time). These are not my rules, but they are the rules I am held by.

I can bypass much of this, but sometimes not.
Agreed. I've seen first hand and have discussed what all goes on behind the scenes for lfs. There was one that you only need 300 minimum to order. And from the sounds of it they sounded like a reputable source...

I will warn that no matter how "reputable" a wholesaler seems, until you have a good relationship with them (and I mean $)...they are questionable at best.

Here is an example...I have a wholesaler in Hawaii....I had a person wanting to order a pair of crosshatch triggers....I got a price from them, gave it to her....she found on eBay they were cheaper....from the exact wholesaler.....I had done 50k of business with him over the last year and he is selling them at wholesale price on eBay.....

That's crazy....

Pretty sure I know who that is. Not sure I would call him a wholesaler.

This gets brought up from time to time, and generally, people will place an order or two, but you will get burnt at some point. When you get burnt, who takes the loss? I've seen three local clubs break up and more nationally due to fiasco's ending badly.

As ebushrow mentioned, getting the highest quality at best pricing comes from having an established relationship with a reputable wholesaler/importer. This takes time and money. These quick jobbers (aka brokers) could care less about the quality or outcome of the transaction, they get their cut no matter what.

While I sincerely wish you all the best, the supply chain exists for a reason.

So I had heard in California(I'm east coast) they have fish brokers that you contact and they find you your fish that is the best quality for the fair price.

Southern California is the land of wholesalers. Meet 10 people into reefing, 1 of them has a friend at a wholesaler, or a friend who works at a wholesaler, or people who just have mad connections. Ask around with the people you know, you may be surprised.

Well that's just not fair to us east coasters lol. We pay more on average then the west coast guys.

And you get our left-overs :(

But seriously, people have connections everywhere. East coast has them too, and they're catching up quickly. There's a reason RAP started in California, and there's a reason it's spread to Florida and NYC ;)

Keep an eye out! You never know what you'll run into.

Oh I am for sure. That's why I took matters into my own hands. And hopefully we can catch up quicker. We don't want your leftovers lol jk

Don't worry, once in a blue moon we get Florida's left overs now too :D

It's a good time to be a reefer. And not to get all serious... But especially with the ocean as it is. As chunks of sweet reef may help populate reefs someday. Come on, who doesn't wanna take a trip to Orange Passion reef, or Homewrecker cove?! haha

You guys in Florida have at least 2 wholesalers in your back yard....Try living in the Midwest...

You'd be surprised. The majority of the money the big CA wholesalers make is shipping stuff to the east coast wholesalers and even out of the country. This is where the volume orders are made. LFS's can only buy so much livestock, but supplying other wholesalers is where the money is at.

You got it. Wholesalers deal with other wholesalers quite frequently it seems. Corals, fish, and Inverts have to land on one coast before the goods spread around the US.

Maybe one day we'll have an Oklahoma seaport to even things out [emoji12]
